Manual Transmission Shift Pattern

The shift pattern is conventional, as shown.
Fully depress the clutch pedal when shifting gears, then release it slowly.
This vehicle is equipped with a device that prevents reverse (R) from being engaged by mistake. Push the shift lever down and move it to R.

WARNING
Do not apply sudden engine braking when driving on slippery surfaces or at high speed:
Downshifting when driving on wet, snowy or icy roads, or at high speed, causes sudden engine braking, which is dangerous.
A sudden change in wheel rotation speed may cause the wheels to skid. This may cause loss of vehicle control and an accident.
Make sure to place the shift lever in 1 or R and apply the parking brake before leaving the vehicle:
Otherwise, the vehicle could move and cause an accident.
WARNING
- Do not keep your foot on the clutch pedal except when shifting gears. Do not use the clutch to hold the vehicle stationary on an incline.
Keeping your foot on the clutch pedal will cause premature wear and damage.
Otherwise, you may select 2nd gear by mistake and damage the transmission.
NOTE
If reverse (R) is difficult to engage, return to neutral, release the clutch pedal and try again.
Gear Shifting Recommendations
Upshifting
During normal acceleration, the following shift points are recommended.

Downshifting
When slowing down in heavy traffic or climbing a steep hill, downshift before the engine labors. This prevents the engine from stalling and allows better acceleration when more speed is needed.
When descending a steep grade, downshift to maintain a safe speed and to reduce brake wear.
