With automatic light control

* The headlight and other light settings change automatically according to the ambient brightness detected by the sensor.
Automatic light control
When the headlight switch is in the position
and the ignition switch is turned to
ON, the optical sensor detects ambient brightness or darkness and automatically turns the headlights, other exterior lights, and instrument panel lights on or off (see the table above).
WARNING
- Do not obstruct the optical sensor by attaching a label or sticker to the windshield. The optical sensor may not function properly.
Type A

Type B

- The optical sensor also functions as the rain sensor for automatic wiper control. Do not place your hands or scrapers near the windshield when the wiper lever is in the
position and the
ignition switch is ON, as your fingers could be pinched or the wipers and wiper blades could be damaged when they operate automatically. When you want to clean the windshield, be sure to turn the wipers off completely, especially when removing ice and snow, and particularly if you are strongly tempted to leave the engine running.
NOTE
- The headlights, other exterior lights, and instrument panel lights may not turn off immediately even when the surrounding area is bright, because the optical sensor judges it to be night if the surrounding area remains continuously dark for several minutes, for example inside long tunnels, in traffic jams in a tunnel, or in covered parking areas.
In this case, the lights turn off if the light switch is set to the OFF position
.
position and the ignition switch is set to ACC or OFF, the headlights, other exterior lights, and instrument panel lights turn off.
Xenon discharge headlight bulbs
The low beam headlight bulbs are xenon discharge bulbs that produce a white light over a wide area.
WARNING
Do not replace xenon discharge bulbs yourself
Replacing xenon discharge bulbs yourself is dangerous.
Because xenon discharge bulbs require high voltage, you may receive an electric shock if the bulbs are not handled properly. When bulb replacement is required, contact an authorized Mazda dealer.
NOTE
If the headlights flicker or their brightness decreases, the bulbs may be near the end of their service life and must be replaced. Contact an authorized Mazda dealer.

Headlight Height Adjustment
The number of passengers and the load in the luggage compartment change the headlight aim.
The headlight aim is adjusted automatically when the headlights are on.
A malfunction in the system or operating conditions is indicated by a warning.
Refer to Indicator and Warning Lights on page 4-24.
Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS)
The Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) automatically turns the headlight beams left or right, using the steering wheel input, when the headlights are on.
A malfunction in the system or operating conditions is indicated by a warning.
Refer to Indicator and Warning Lights on page 4-24.
AFS OFF switch
The AFS OFF switch turns off the Adaptive Front-lighting System. The AFS OFF indicator light comes on in the instrument panel.
Press the AFS OFF switch again to turn the Adaptive Front-lighting System back on. The AFS OFF indicator light goes off.

Daytime Running Lights

The daytime running lights come on automatically when the ignition switch is turned to ON.
The daytime running lights turn off when the parking brake is applied or when the selector lever is moved to P (vehicles with automatic transmission).
NOTE
