PARKTRONIC

~4min read

PARKTRONIC in the Mercedes E-Class (4th generation, W212, 2009–2016) makes parking easier with precise ultrasonic sensors that show the distance to obstacles visually and audibly. The system provides helpful warnings and works reliably up to a certain speed to make parking maneuvers safer. Tips on caring for the sensors ensure long-term functionality.

Important Safety Notes

PARKTRONIC is an electronic ultrasonic parking aid. It monitors the area around your vehicle with six sensors in the front bumper and six sensors in the rear bumper. PARKTRONIC shows the distance between your vehicle and an obstacle visually and audibly.

PARKTRONIC is only an aid. It cannot replace your attention to your immediate surroundings. You are always responsible for safe maneuvering, parking and pulling out. Make sure there are no people, animals or objects in the maneuvering area when maneuvering, parking or pulling out.

NOTE

When parking, pay particular attention to objects below or above the sensors, e.g. flower pots or trailer drawbars. PARKTRONIC does not detect such objects at close range. Otherwise you may damage the vehicle or the objects.

The sensors may not detect snow and objects that absorb ultrasonic waves.

Ultrasound sources, such as a car wash, the compressed-air brake system of trucks or a pneumatic hammer, can interfere with PARKTRONIC.

PARKTRONIC may not function properly on uneven terrain.

PARKTRONIC is automatically activated when you

  • switch on the ignition
  • on vehicles with automatic transmission, move the transmission to position D, R or N
  • release the parking brake.
PARKTRONIC switches off at speeds above 18 km/h. It switches on again at lower speeds.

Sensor range

General Notes

PARKTRONIC does not detect obstacles that are
  • are below the detection range, e.g. people, animals or objects
  • are above the detection range, e.g. protruding loads, overhangs or truck loading ramps.

The sensors must be free of dirt, ice or slush. Otherwise they cannot function correctly. Clean the sensors regularly, without scratching or damaging them.

If there is an obstacle in this area, the corresponding warning displays light up and you hear a warning tone. If you fall below the minimum distance, the distance may not be displayed.

Warning displays

Ready-to-measure segments
The warning displays show the distance between the sensor and the obstacle. The warning display for the front zone is on the instrument panel above the center air vents. The warning display for the rear zone is in the rear compartment on the headliner.

The warning display for each side of the vehicle is divided into five yellow and two red segments. If the yellow ready-to-measure segments light upPARKTRONIC is ready to measure.

The selector lever position or the gear position of the automatic transmission and the direction the vehicle is rolling determine which warning display is active when the engine is running.

Manual transmission:

Selector lever position Warning display
Forward gear

or

Neutral
Front zone active
Reverse Gear Rear and front zones active
Automatic transmission:
Gear position Warning display
D Front zone active
R or N Rear and front zones active
P none active
When you approach an obstacle with the vehicle, one or more segments light up depending on the distance.

From the

  • sixth segment, you hear an interval warning tone for approx. two seconds
  • seventh segment, you hear a warning tone for approx. two seconds. You have reached the minimum distance.

When the indicator lamplights up, PARKTRONIC is switched off. The Active Parking Assist is then also not available.

Info

PARKTRONIC is switched on automatically when you turn the key in the ignition lock to position 2.

Towing a trailer

Note

Fold in the ball coupling when you do not need the trailer hitch. The minimum detection range of PARKTRONIC to an obstacle refers to the bumper and not to the ball coupling.

When you have made the electrical connection between your vehicle and the trailer, PARKTRONIC is deactivated for the rear zone.

PARKTRONIC problems

Problem Possible causes/consequences and solutions
Only the red segments in the PARKTRONIC warning displays are lit. You also hear a warning tone for approx. two seconds.

PARKTRONIC then switches off and the indicator lamp on the PARKTRONIC button lights up.

PARKTRONIC is faulty and has switched off.

If problems persist, have PARKTRONIC checked at a qualified workshop.

Only the red segments in the PARKTRONIC warning displays are lit. PARKTRONIC then switches off. The PARKTRONIC sensors are dirty or faulty.

Clean the PARKTRONIC sensors .

Switch the ignition back on.

Another radio or ultrasonic source may be causing interference.

Check the function of PARKTRONIC at a different location.

PARKTRONIC in the Mercedes E-Class W212 (model years 2009–2016) assists you with parking safely, both when parking in and pulling out. Using ultrasonic sensors, the system monitors the area in front of and behind the vehicle and warns the driver when approaching obstacles.

Clear visual and audible signals make parking easier and safer, a typical example of the practical technology of Mercedes-Benz.
