~2min read

GENERAL INFORMATION

Warning: During assembly, the following parts must always be replaced: axle shaft nut, inner CV joint snap ring, all removed cotter pins, lower ball joint nuts. Installation

PROCEDURE

1. Check the condition of the axle shaft oil seal; it is recommended to replace the seal.

2. Thoroughly clean the axle shaft splines, then apply grease to the splines and the seal lip.

3. Check that the boot clamps are securely fastened.

4. Replace the inner snap ring (which was deformed during removal).

5. Be careful when installing the axle shaft so as not to damage the oil seal.

6. After greasing the seal and splines, the axle shaft can be installed without using special tools.

Right Axle Shaft on Early Production Vehicles (No Center Bearing Support)

7. Carefully insert the axle shaft into the differential, taking care not to damage the oil seal.

8. Engage the splines with the splines of the side gear, then press the axle shaft in so that the snap ring snaps into the groove of the side gear.

9. Make sure the snap ring is seated in the groove by firmly rocking the axle shaft.

Right Axle Shaft on Vehicles with Center Bearing Support

10. Carefully insert the axle shaft into the differential through the opening in the bracket, taking care not to damage the oil seal.

11. Align the bolt holes and install the bearing housing.

12. Tighten the bolts to the specified torque.

Left Axle Shaft on All Vehicles Except Those with Automatic Transmission

13. Use the same procedure as for installing the right axle shaft.

Left Axle Shaft on Vehicles with Automatic Transmission

14. Use the same procedure as for installing the right axle shaft. Install the left axle shaft first, then the right axle shaft.

All Vehicles

15. Apply grease to the external splines of the axle shaft and insert it into the hub.

16. Install the washer and screw on a new nut.

17. Insert the ball joint into the steering knuckle and tighten the nut to the specified torque.

18. Connect the tie rod end and tighten the nut.

19. Tighten the tie rod end nut further, just enough to insert the cotter pin, without exceeding the specified tightening torque.

20. Install a cotter pin in the nut.

21. Install the brake caliper.

22. Tighten the new axle shaft nut to the specified torque while holding the hub from rotating.

23. Install a new castellated lock washer, aligning the cotter pin slot with the hole in the axle shaft, and install a cotter pin.

24. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle.

25. Fill the case with oil/transmission fluid.
