Brake System

Bleeding the Brake System

~1min read

PROCEDURE

WARNING This operation must be performed by two people, observing safety precautions, as brake fluid is toxic.

Bleeding sequence: – rear right wheel; – rear left wheel; – front right wheel; – front left wheel. If work was performed only on the brake of one wheel, it is sufficient to bleed the cylinder of that wheel only.

Warning: For topping up or replacement, use only new brake fluid FMVSS116DOT4.

PROCEDURE 1. Clean dirt and dust from the bleed valve on the wheel to be bled. 2. Check and, if necessary, top up the brake fluid in the reservoir. 3. Remove the protective cap from the bleed valve and fit a rubber drain hose onto the valve nipple. 4. Immerse the end of the hose in a clean transparent container partially filled with brake fluid. 5. Depress the brake pedal sharply 4–5 times (1–2 s interval between presses), then, holding the pedal depressed, loosen the bleed valve by 1/2–3/4 turn. Air bubbles will be visible in the fluid flowing from the hose. After fluid flow from the hose stops, tighten the bleed valve securely and release the brake pedal. 6. Repeat step 5 until air bubbles no longer appear in the discharged fluid. Warning: When bleeding the brake system, top up the brake fluid in the reservoir and do not allow the level to drop below the «MIN» mark.

7. Remove the hose, wipe the valve end and fit the cap. 8. If required, bleed the brakes of the remaining wheels. Warning: Do not reuse brake fluid drained during bleeding. If the brake system is not bled thoroughly enough, the brake pedal will feel excessively «soft» at the end of its travel.
