~2min read

Disassembly of Rear Disc Brake Cylinder PROCEDURE 1. Perform steps 1–5 of Subsection 10.9.1.

2. Loosen the brake hose fitting nut to facilitate further removal. 3. Remove cap 25 (see illustration Rear Disc Brake) from bleeder valve 24. 4. Disconnect parking brake cable 1 (see illustration Parking Brake Cable Removal) from lever 2. 5. Unscrew upper bolt 20 (see illustration Rear Disc Brake) securing cylinder housing 26 to caliper 16, holding guide pin 21 with a spanner. 6. Unscrew lower bolt 29. 7. Clamp the brake hose, taking care not to damage it. 8. Unscrew the brake hose from the cylinder housing, placing a container beforehand. 9. Plug the brake hose opening. 10. Unscrew bleeder valve 24 from the cylinder housing. 11. Remove protective boot 17. 12. Unscrew piston 18 from the cylinder using a hex key. 13. Remove seal 19 from the cylinder. Caution To remove the seal, use a wooden spatula. Metal tools should not be used, as they may damage the seal seating surface.

14. Clean piston and cylinder with alcohol. 15. Inspect the working surfaces of the piston and cylinder. Caution If there are signs of wear, scoring or nicks on the working surfaces of the piston or cylinder, replace the piston and cylinder housing as a set.

Assembly of Rear Disc Brake Cylinder PROCEDURE 1. Lubricate new seal 19 (see illustration Rear Disc Brake) with brake fluid and install it in the seat in the cylinder. 2. Install protective boot 17 onto the rear part of piston 18 (opposite the groove). 3. Turn the edge of protective boot 17 outward. 4. Lubricate piston 18 and protective boot 17 with brake fluid. 5. Insert piston 18 into the cylinder and turn the edge of protective boot 17 back so that it seats in the slot on cylinder housing 26. 6. Carefully screw piston 18 into the cylinder using a hex key, making sure the inner edge of protective boot 17 engages the groove on the piston. 7. Screw bleeder valve 24 into cylinder housing 26. 8. Install cylinder housing 26 onto caliper 16. 9. Install new lower bolt 29, holding the guide pin. 10. Install the brake hose onto the cylinder housing and secure the fitting nut. 11. Remove the clamp from the brake hose. 12. Install old upper bolt 20. 13. Perform steps 18–23 of Subsection 10.9.1.
