Wheel Balancing

~1min read

Unbalanced wheels cause steering wheel vibration or shaking of the front end. Both effects are especially noticeable at certain speeds. The cause is uneven weight distribution around the wheel. For this reason, wheels must be balanced both statically and dynamically. Two methods are used:

PROCEDURE

Remove the wheel from the vehicle and mount it on a wheel balancing machine. There it is rotated at test speed. The resulting imbalance can be corrected by installing lead balance weights.

To eliminate any remaining imbalance, precision balancing must be performed. This also compensates for imbalance of the wheel hub and brake disc. Wheels fitted to front-wheel-drive Audi 80 models are driven by the engine to the required high speed, revealing residual imbalance. This is then corrected again with lead weights.

On all-wheel-drive Audi 80 vehicles, all 4 wheels must be raised to perform precision balancing.

Because front-wheel-drive models have no drive to the rear wheels, the rear wheels are driven by an electric motor with a friction disc for dynamic balancing.
