Diesel Engines - Removal and Installation of V-Ribbed Belt
GENERAL INFORMATION
The ribbed V-belt (poly-V belt) is wider than a conventional V-belt and has several longitudinal ribs. The ribbed V-belt drives the alternator, power steering pump, radiator fan and, depending on equipment, the air conditioning compressor.
REMOVAL
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the lower engine compartment cover. Refer to Removal and Installation of Lower Engine Compartment Cover.
2. Turbodiesel (TDI): Remove the connecting pipe between the intercooler and the turbocharger. To do this, loosen the clamps.
3. If the belt is to be reinstalled, mark its direction of rotation. To do this, draw an arrow on the belt in the direction of rotation with a marker. The engine rotates clockwise when viewed from the right side of the vehicle.

4. Release the belt tension. To do this, turn the tensioner device with a 16 mm open-end wrench in the direction of the arrow. Remove the V-ribbed belt from the alternator pulley first. The alternator pulley is located on the right, next to the tensioner pulley. INSTALLATION

5. Tension the tensioner device with a flat 16 mm open-end wrench and place the V-ribbed belt over the pulleys. Install the belt on the alternator pulley last (on the right, next to the tensioner pulley).
CAUTION
When installing a used belt, observe its direction of rotation. Viewed from the right side of the vehicle, the engine rotates clockwise. Installing the belt in the opposite direction causes accelerated belt wear.6. Then slowly release the tensioner. Make sure the V-ribbed belt is correctly positioned on the pulleys. Belt tension is set automatically.
7. Turbodiesel (TDI): Install the connecting pipe between the intercooler and the turbocharger and secure it with the clamps.
8. Start the engine and visually check belt operation.
9. Install the lower engine compartment cover. Refer to Removal and Installation of Lower Engine Compartment Cover.
