Electronic differential lock (EDS)
The electronic differential lock prevents an individual wheel from spinning.
General information
The electronic differential lock (EDS) makes starting, accelerating and climbing easier, or even possible, on surfaces in very poor condition.
Operation
EDS operates automatically, without any intervention by the driver. The system monitors the speed of the driven wheels via the ABS sensors. If a significant speed difference is detected between the driven wheels (approx. 100 rpm), for example on a slippery surface on one side only, the spinning wheel is braked and drive force is transferred to the other driven wheels. This applies up to a speed of approx. 40 km/h (front-wheel drive) or 80 km/h. The control process is audible.
Starting
If a wheel spins when starting on a surface with varying grip (one wheel is, e.g., on ice), depress the accelerator pedal until the vehicle moves off.
Brake overheating
Under very heavy loading, the electronic differential lock switches off automatically to prevent the disc brake of the braked wheel from overheating. The vehicle remains operational and behaves the same as a vehicle without the EDS electronic differential lock.
After the brake has cooled down, EDS switches back on automatically.
CAUTION!
- Accelerate with caution on a surface that is uniformly slippery, such as snow or ice. The drive wheels may spin even if the vehicle is equipped with the electronic differential lock EDS, and this can adversely affect the vehicle's road stability - risk of accident.
- The electronic differential lock EDS does not relieve you of the need to always adapt your driving to road conditions and traffic. The greater safety it provides must not encourage you to take unreasonable risks - risk of accident!
Note
If the ABS warning lamp comes on, this may also indicate a fault in the EDS system. Contact a qualified workshop.
