Speed Limit Info with No Overtaking Indication

~2min read

With the Speed Limit Info function, the BMW 5 Series VII generation displays the currently valid speed limit, including supplementary signs, detected by a camera in the area of the interior rear-view mirror. The data is compared with rain sensor and navigation information to provide accurate warnings. The system is supplemented by the No Overtaking Indication, which shows corresponding symbols in the display when the relevant signs are detected. Important: These functions do not replace the driver's attention. They support the driving experience with visual cues and intelligent assistance, especially in changing traffic conditions.

Speed Limit Info

Principle

Speed Limit Info shows the currently detected speed limit and, where applicable, valid supplementary signs, such as those for wet conditions, in the instrument cluster.

General

The camera in the area of the interior rear-view mirror detects traffic signs at the roadside as well as variable displays on overhead gantry signs.

Traffic signs with supplementary signs, e.g. for wet conditions, are taken into account and compared with vehicle data, e.g. from the rain sensor.

The traffic sign and associated supplementary signs are then displayed in the instrument cluster or ignored, depending on the situation. Some supplementary signs are considered when evaluating the speed limit but are not shown in the instrument cluster.

The system takes into account the information stored in the navigation system and also displays speed limits on roads without signs.

Speed limits for trailer operation are not displayed.

No Overtaking Indication

Principle

Overtaking bans and their cancellations recognized by the camera are shown with corresponding symbols in the instrument cluster.

General

The system only takes into account overtaking bans and cancellations indicated by road signs.

No display is shown in the following situations:

  • In countries where overtaking bans are mainly indicated by road markings.
  • On roads without signs.
  • At railroad crossings, road markings or other situations that indicate an overtaking ban without a sign.

Overtaking bans for trailer operation are not displayed.

Safety information

WARNING The system does not relieve you of your own responsibility to correctly assess visibility and traffic conditions. There is a risk of accident. Adapt your driving to traffic conditions. Observe traffic and actively intervene in the corresponding situations.

The Speed Limit Info of the BMW 5 G30/G31 offers a high level of safety and comfort by reliably displaying speed limits in the instrument cluster. Thanks to precise detection by the front camera and integration with the navigation system, the driver is always informed of current limits, even when no signs are visible.

This system is complemented by the overtaking ban display, which recognizes and shows relevant traffic signs. This makes it easier to observe traffic rules, especially in unfamiliar areas or in difficult visibility conditions. This underlines the high safety standards of the BMW 5 G30/G31.
