Seat belts

~6min read

Retractor

The seat belts are fitted with a retractor that automatically adjusts the length of the webbing to the occupant's build. The belt retracts automatically when it is not in use.

The retractors are fitted with an automatic locking device in the event of a collision, emergency braking or vehicle rollover. To unlock it, pull the webbing firmly, then release it so that it rewinds slightly.

Pyrotechnic pretensioner

This system improves safety in frontal and side impacts.

Depending on the severity of the impact, the pyrotechnic pretensioner system instantly tightens the belts and holds them against the occupants' bodies.

Pyrotechnic pretensioner belts are active when the ignition is on.

Load limiter

This system reduces the pressure of the belt against the occupant's chest, thereby improving protection.

In the event of an impact

Depending on the nature and severity of the impact, the pyrotechnic device may trigger before and independently of the airbags. Triggering of the pretensioners is accompanied by a slight release of harmless smoke and a noise, caused by the activation of the pyrotechnic cartridge built into the system.

In all cases, the airbag warning light comes on.

After an impact, have the seat belt system checked and, if necessary, replaced by a CITROËN dealer or a qualified workshop.

Front seat belts

The front seat belts are fitted with a pyrotechnic pretensioner system and a force limiter.

► Check that the buckle is locked by pulling on the webbing.

Unlatching

► Press the red button on the buckle.

► Guide the belt as it retracts.

Fitting

Sécurité

► Pull the webbing and insert tongue A into the left buckle (on the right of the passenger seated in the vehicle).

Removal and storage

Before handling the rear seats, to avoid damaging the seat belts, check that the outer seat belts are properly tensioned and attach the tongues to their anchor points. The centre belt must be fully retracted.

Unfastened and unbuckling warnings

Sécurité

Unfastened / unbuckled warning light

It lights up red both on the instrument panel and on the front passenger seat belt and airbag indicator, as soon as the system detects that a seat belt is unfastened or unbuckled.

Unfastened / unbuckled seat belt location indicators

The indicators lit red on the display show the location of the unfastened or unbuckled seat belts.

Front seat belt unfastened

When the ignition is switched on, the warning light and corresponding indicators come on if the driver and/or front passenger has not fastened their seat belt.

At a speed above 20 km/h, these warning lights flash, accompanied by a rising audible signal for about 2 minutes. After this time, the warning lights remain on until the front seat belts are fastened.

Rear seat belt unfastened

When the ignition is switched on, with the engine running or the vehicle moving at a speed below 20 km/h, the warning light and corresponding indicators come on for 1 minute if one or more rear seat belts are not fastened.

Seat belt unbuckling

After the ignition is switched on, the warning light and corresponding indicators come on as soon as the driver and/or one or more passengers unbuckle their seat belt.

At a speed above 20 km/h, these warning lights flash, accompanied by an audible signal for about 2 minutes. After this time, the warning lights remain on until the seat belts are refastened.

Tips

The driver must make sure that passengers are using their seat belts correctly and that they are all properly fastened before driving.

Regardless of seat position in the vehicle, always wear your seat belt, even for short trips.

Do not swap the buckles, as they would not fully perform their function.

To ensure the seat belt buckles operate correctly, make sure there is no foreign object (e.g. coin) in them before fastening.

Before and after use, make sure the seat belt is correctly retracted.

After folding or moving a seat or rear bench seat, make sure the seat belt is correctly positioned and retracted.

Fitting

The lower part of the belt must be positioned as low as possible across the hips.

The upper part must be positioned in the hollow of the shoulder.

At the front, it may be necessary to adjust the seat height to adjust the position of the seat belt.

To be effective, a seat belt:

- must be worn snugly against the body;

- must be pulled across the body with a smooth movement, making sure it does not twist;

- must restrain only one person;

- must not show any signs of cutting or fraying;

- must not be altered or modified, so as not to impair its performance.

Recommendations for children

Use an appropriate child seat if the passenger is under 12 years old or less than 1.50 m tall.

Never use the same seat belt to secure more than one child.

Never carry a child on your lap.

For more information on Child seats, refer to the corresponding section.

Maintenance

Due to current safety requirements, for any work on your vehicle's seat belts, contact a qualified workshop with the necessary skills and equipment, which the CITROËN Network is able to provide.

Have the seat belts checked periodically by the CITROËN Network or a qualified workshop, especially if the webbing shows signs of damage.

Clean the seat belt webbing with soapy water or a textile cleaning product sold by the CITROËN Network.
