Child seats
Regulations on transporting children vary from country to country.
Check the legislation in force in your country.
For optimum safety, observe the following instructions:
- In accordance with European regulations, all children under 12 years old or under 1.50 m (4 ft 11 in) tall must be transported in approved child seats suited to their weight, in seats equipped with a seat belt or ISOFIX anchorages.
- Statistically, the safest seats for transporting children are the rear seats of your vehicle.
- A child weighing less than 9 kg must always be transported facing the rear, both in the front and in the rear.
It is recommended to transport children on the rear seats of the vehicle:
- "rear-facing" up to 3 years old,
- "forward-facing" from 3 years old.
Make sure the seat belt is correctly positioned and firmly tightened.
For child seats with a support leg, make sure it is in stable contact with the floor.
Incorrect installation of a child seat in the vehicle compromises the child's protection in the event of a collision.
Check that there is no seat belt or seat belt buckle under the child seat, as this could make it unstable.
Always fasten the seat belts or the harness of child seats, keeping slack relative to the child's body to a minimum, even for short journeys.
When installing the child seat with the seat belt, check that the belt is tight on the child seat and holds it firmly on the vehicle seat. If the passenger seat is adjustable, move it forward if necessary.
Remove the head restraint before installing a child seat with a backrest on a passenger seat.
Make sure the head restraint is stowed or secured so that it does not become a projectile in the event of heavy braking.
Refit the head restraint once the child seat has been removed.
Children in the rear
A child seat with ISOFIX or i-Size fittings must never be installed on the centre rear passenger seat.
Installing a booster seat
The upper part of the seat belt must be positioned over the child's shoulder without touching the neck.
Check that the lap part of the seat belt passes across the child's thighs.
Use a booster seat with a backrest, fitted with a belt guide at shoulder level.
Additional protection
To prevent accidental opening of the rear doors and windows, use the "Child safety" device.
Take care not to open the rear windows by more than one third.
To protect young children from the sun's rays, fit side sunshades to the rear windows.
For safety, never leave:
- A child alone and unattended in a vehicle.
- A child or an animal in a vehicle exposed to the sun with the windows closed.
- The keys within reach of children inside the vehicle.
