Accessory Drive Belt Inspection

~1min read
  • Do not attempt to inspect the accessory drive belt with the engine running.
  • When working near the radiator cooling fan, disconnect the fan motor. The fan is temperature controlled and may start at any time, regardless of the ignition switch position. You may be injured by the moving fan blades.
  • You may be seriously injured when working on or near the vehicle. Perform only maintenance tasks for which you have the knowledge and proper equipment. If you are unsure of your ability to perform a task, take your vehicle to a qualified mechanic.

When inspecting accessory drive belts, small cracks running across the ribbed surface from rib to rib are considered normal and are not a reason to replace the belt. However, cracks running along the rib (not across it) are not normal. Any belt with cracks running along the rib must be replaced. Also replace the belt if it shows excessive wear, frayed cords, or severe glazing.

Conditions requiring replacement:

  • Rib chunking (one or more ribs have separated from the belt body)
  • Rib or belt wear
  • Longitudinal belt cracking (cracks between two ribs)
  • Belt slippage
  • Rib jumping (belt does not stay properly seated on the pulley)
  • Belt broken (note: determine and correct the cause before installing a new belt)
  • Noise (an unpleasant squeal, chirp, or rumble heard or felt while the belt is operating)

Some conditions may be caused by a faulty component, such as a belt pulley. Belt pulleys must be carefully inspected for damage and alignment.

Belt replacement on some models requires special tools. Service by an authorized dealer is recommended.
