EOBD system

~1min read

The EOBD system (European On-Board Diagnosis) is a diagnostic system on the engine control units. It detects and reports faults in the electronic systems that may worsen emissions.

The purpose of the system is:

  • To monitor the effectiveness of the emission control system;
  • To report an increase in emissions caused by a vehicle malfunction;
  • To indicate the components that need to be replaced.

This diagnostic system signals via the warning lighton the
instrument panel (together with the message on the display, see chapter "Warning lights and indicators") that components have deteriorated or that the system has a fault.

Note: the system also has a connector to which suitable equipment can be connected to read the fault codes stored by the electronics, together with a series of special parameters for diagnosing engine operation.

This check may also be carried out by the traffic police.

Note: after the fault has been repaired, the Fiat Service Network must always carry out a bench test and, if necessary, road tests, including over longer distances.
