Cruise control

~3min read

This electronically controlled device assists the driver and allows driving at speeds above 30 km/h on long, straight, dry roads where gear changes are not frequently required (e.g. on motorways), at a set speed without operating the accelerator pedal.

The device therefore offers no advantages on busy country roads, and it must not be used in city traffic.

Activating the system
Einschaltung der vorrichtung

Turn ring a (fig. 54) to ON.

The device can only be switched on in 4th or 5th gear.

With the device switched on, the vehicle speed may slightly exceed the stored speed on downhill gradients.

Activation is indicated by the indicator lamp on the instrument panel lighting up and by a message appearing in the display (see chapter "Indicator lamps and messages").

Storing the speed

To set the speed, proceed as follows:

  • Turn ring a (fig. 54) to ON and press the accelerator pedal until the vehicle reaches the desired speed;
  • Set ring b to (+) for at least three seconds, then release it: the driving speed is stored and the accelerator pedal can be released.

If necessary (for example when overtaking), the vehicle can be accelerated by pressing the accelerator pedal; after releasing it, the vehicle returns to the previously stored speed.

Recalling the stored speed

If the device has been switched off, for example by pressing the brake or clutch pedal, the stored speed can be recalled as follows:

  • By gradually accelerating to close to the stored speed;
  • By engaging the same gear that was engaged when the speed was stored (4th or 5th gear);
  • Press button c (fig. 54).
Increasing the stored speed

The stored speed can be increased in two ways:

  • By pressing the accelerator pedal and storing the speed reached; or
  • By briefly turning ring b (fig. 54) to (+).

Each ring step corresponds to a speed increase of approx. 1 km/h; if the ring is held turned, the speed changes continuously.

Reducing the stored speed

The stored speed can be reduced in two ways:

  • By switching the device off and then storing the new speed; or
  • By holding ring b (fig. 54) turned to (-) until the new speed is reached; the new speed is stored automatically.

Each ring step corresponds to a speed reduction of approx. 1 km/h; if the ring is held turned, the speed changes continuously.

Deactivating the device

The device is switched off by turning ring a (fig. 54) to OFF or turning the ignition key to STOP. The device is also switched off automatically in any of the following cases:

  • By pressing the brake or clutch pedal;
  • When the ASR or ESP systems intervene (where fitted);
Note

Do not shift into neutral while driving with the device switched on.

Note

In case of a malfunction or failure of the device, turn ring a (fig. 54) to OFF and contact the FIAT service network after checking that the fuse has not blown.
