Trailer Braking Precautions
Electric brakes and manual, automatic or surge-type trailer brakes are safe if you install them correctly and adjust them to the manufacturer's specifications. Trailer brakes must comply with local and federal regulations.
The towing vehicle braking system rating applies to the full vehicle weight rating, not the combined gross weight rating.
Some states require functioning trailer brakes for trailers over a specified weight. Be sure to check state regulations for this specified weight.
Ford Motor Company recommends separate functioning braking systems for trailers over 1500 lb (680 kg) when loaded.
