Shift Cable Removal
The vehicles covered in this Manual are equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). Before performing any work near the airbag module, steering column, or instrument panel, disable the SRS to prevent injury from accidental deployment (see Section Body Electrical System). SRS wiring can be easily identified by its yellow insulation.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the center console (see Section Body).

2. Loosen the cable adjuster locknut.
3. Turn the rubber grommet 1/4 turn counterclockwise and release it, together with the cable, from the support bracket.
4. Raise the vehicle and support it on safety stands.
5. Under the vehicle, remove the exhaust pipe with heat shield (see Section Fuel and Exhaust Systems).

6. Under the vehicle, in the area of the console, remove the cable guide bracket and release the cable's rubber grommet from the floor panel.

7. Remove the bolts from the shift cable bracket.
To prevent damage to the cable connection to the control lever, remove the bracket before the cover.
8. Remove the mounting bolts and remove the shift cable cover.

9. Remove the stopper bolt and remove the shift lever with the attached shift cable from the transaxle assembly.
