Four-cylinder models may be equipped with either a 5-speed manual transmission or an automatic transmission (AT). All V6 models are equipped with a 4-speed AT.
The automatic transmissions used on Honda Accord vehicles are 4-speed electronically controlled units. Four-cylinder models use the VBXA transmission, while V6 models use the B7XA AT. The location of the AT and related components in the engine compartment is shown in the accompanying illustration. The transmission number is stamped on the machined pad on the side of the case.
Due to the complexity of the AT, the lack of commercially available internal replacement parts, and the need for special equipment, the authors of this Manual do not recommend that vehicle owners perform a complete transmission overhaul on their own. This Section covers only diagnosis of general transmission malfunctions, routine maintenance, adjustments, removal, and installation.
Sometimes, in the case of serious damage, it is more practical and simpler to replace the transmission than to spend time and money rebuilding a failed unit. Regardless of the method chosen to return a failed AT to service, performing its removal and installation yourself can significantly reduce costs (first make sure the transmission actually requires repair).
