Clutch and Drive Shafts

Replacement of Boots and Inspection of CV Joints

~1min read

If boot damage is found, the condition of the corresponding CV joint must be carefully inspected. Fully rebuilt drive shaft assemblies are often available on an exchange basis, which greatly simplifies the job and reduces labor time. Before starting disassembly, check local prices for the necessary parts and compare them with the cost of a rebuilt assembly.

Split-type replacement boots for CV joints are available at auto accessory stores. Installing these boots does not require removing the shaft from the vehicle, which is convenient in principle. However, the authors of this Manual recommend removing the shafts anyway to inspect the CV joints and repack them with fresh grease.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the drive shaft (refer to the Drive Shaft Removal and Installation section).
2. Clamp the removed shaft in a vise with soft jaws.
