Changing a Flat Tire
Changing a Flat Tire
Vehicles equipped with a full-size spare tire
If a tire is damaged, stop immediately in a safe place to replace it. If a tire is damaged, slowly and carefully drive along the shoulder or the far right lane to the nearest exit to a suitable area.

WARNING
Use the jack included in the vehicle tool kit. Attempting to use unsuitable jacks, or using the jack included in your vehicle's tool kit to change a tire on another passenger car, may result in jack failure or damage to the vehicle.
For vehicles with the Honda TRK tire repair kit: Your vehicle does not have a spare tire; instead, it is equipped with a tire repair kit. This repair kit is designed for temporary repair of a damaged tire on the road (see page 440).

WARNING
A vehicle that is not securely supported may slip off the jack and cause serious injury to a person standing near or under the vehicle.
Strictly observe all precautions when replacing a damaged wheel, and never get under a vehicle raised on a jack unless proper safety stands are in place.
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface with a firm, non-slippery base. Shift the transmission lever into REVERSE. Set the parking brake.
Except for the "Type R" version: If you were towing a trailer, disconnect it from the vehicle.
2. Turn on the hazard warning flashers and turn the ignition key to the LOCK (0) position.
Ask all passengers to leave the vehicle while the wheel is being replaced.

3. The tools are stored on the left rear side of the luggage compartment.
4. Open the luggage compartment door.
Grasp the strap and lift the luggage compartment floor cover.

5. To hold the floor cover in the raised position, hook the strap onto the hook on the rear side of the luggage compartment cover (on some versions).

6. Remove the tool bag from the rear of the luggage compartment.
Remove the cover by turning the handle counterclockwise. Squeeze the retainer tabs and unbuckle the retaining strap.

7. Turn the jack screw counterclockwise to loosen it from its holder in the body recess. Remove the jack.

8. Remove the tray located under the floor, and take out the vinyl bag and net from it.
9. Reinstall the tray and lower the floor cover.
10. Loosen the wing bolt and remove the spare tire from the luggage compartment well.
11. Place wheel chocks in front of and behind the wheel located diagonally opposite the damaged wheel.

12. Using the wheel wrench, loosen all wheel nuts by half a turn.

13. Position the jack under the body sill at the jacking point nearest to the damaged wheel.
Turn the jack screw clockwise to extend the jack and engage its upper head with the body sill bracket.
Make sure the rib of the body sill bracket is seated in the recess of the jack head.

14. Using the wheel wrench and extension as shown in the illustration, turn the jack screw to raise the vehicle until the damaged wheel is off the ground.
15. Remove the wheel nuts and remove the damaged wheel. Note that the wheel nuts may be very hot. Temporarily place the removed wheel outside-facing up on the ground near the vehicle.

16. Before installing the spare wheel, thoroughly clean the wheel disc mounting surface and the hub with a clean cloth. Be careful: these parts may be very hot after driving.

17. Install the spare wheel. Thread the wheel nuts on by hand, then evenly tighten them with the wheel wrench until the wheel is firmly seated against the hub flange. Do not fully tighten the wheel nuts while the vehicle is raised.
18. Lower the vehicle and remove the jack.

19. Fully tighten the wheel nuts in a star (criss-cross) sequence. Have the wheel nut torque checked at the nearest service station.
Specified wheel nut torque: 108 N·m (11 kgf·m)

20. Place the damaged wheel in the vinyl bag.
21. Place the damaged wheel on the luggage compartment floor.
Be sure to return the luggage compartment cover (if equipped) to the upper position and place the damaged wheel on the cover.

22. Cover the luggage compartment with the net and attach it with two hooks to the rear door opening loops.

23. Wrap the free end of the net around the tire and secure it to the same loops, as shown in the illustration.
24. Stow the jack in the rear left side compartment. Turn the jack bracket to secure it in place.
25. Stow the tool kit in the rear left compartment of the luggage compartment.

WARNING
If tools and other items are not stowed properly, the driver and passengers may be seriously injured by these objects in a collision or sudden stop.
Before continuing to drive after replacing the damaged wheel, stow and securely fasten the removed wheel, jack and tools.
26. Close the luggage compartment door.
