Oil Pressure Warning Light

Oil Pressure Warning Light
The oil pressure warning light should come on when the ignition is switched on (key in the ON (II) position) and go off after the engine starts. The light must not illuminate while the engine is running. If the light stays on or flashes, this indicates a critical drop in engine oil pressure. In this case, take immediate action, otherwise serious damage and engine failure may occur.
In addition, the multifunction information display shows the symbol "
", which may be accompanied by the message "OIL PRESSURE LOW" (see page 104).

WARNING
Operating the engine with low oil pressure leads to engine failure almost immediately due to serious mechanical damage to critical components. Therefore, when the low oil pressure warning light comes on, stop as soon as safely possible and shut off the engine immediately.
1. When it is safe to do so, pull over to the side of the road, stop the vehicle, and turn off the engine. Turn on the hazard warning lights.
2. Wait one minute. Open the hood and check the engine oil level (see page 302). The pressure drop may be caused by a very low oil level in the oil pan, for example, when the vehicle is driven around a corner or during other sudden maneuvers.
3. If necessary, add engine oil and bring the level to normal, using the marks on the dipstick (see page 368).
4. Start the engine and monitor the low oil pressure warning light.
If the warning light does not go off within 10 seconds after starting the engine, stop the engine. This indicates serious engine malfunction that must be corrected before driving can continue (see "Towing a Disabled Vehicle" on page 479).
