Engine system malfunction indicator (for gasoline engine versions)

The indicator comes on for a few seconds when the key is turned to the ON (II) position*. If the indicator comes on at any other time, this indicates a possible malfunction in one of the engine systems that reduce exhaust emissions. Even if you notice no change in engine operation or vehicle performance, malfunctions in these systems may increase fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Continuing to drive with the indicator on may cause serious engine damage and engine failure.

In addition, the following icon appears on the multi-information display: "” appears on the multi-function display, which may be accompanied by the text "CHECK SYSTEM" (see page 104).

If the engine system malfunction indicator comes on while driving, stop in a safe place on the shoulder or at the edge of the road and stop the engine. Then restart the engine and watch the indicator. If the indicator remains on, have the engine systems inspected and repaired at an authorized dealer service center immediately. Until the malfunction is corrected, drive the vehicle at a moderate speed. Do not depress the accelerator pedal fully.

Even if the engine system malfunction indicator goes off after the engine is stopped and restarted, have the vehicle checked at an authorized dealer service center for preventive maintenance if the indicator comes on frequently while driving.

WARNING

Continuing to drive with the engine system malfunction indicator on may damage the emission control devices and the engine. Warranty does not cover defects caused by driving the vehicle with the engine system malfunction indicator on.

*: On vehicles intended for the European market, when the ignition key is turned to the ON (II) position without starting the engine, the engine system malfunction indicator comes on for about 20 seconds. Then it goes off or, depending on operating conditions, blinks 5 times. This is not a sign of a malfunction. The behavior of the indicator described above shows that it is operating in the self-diagnostic mode of the exhaust system.
