Removal
If the compressor is locked up, run the engine at idle and let the air conditioner operate for a few minutes, then stop the engine.
Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
Remove the engine room cover. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Engine Room Cover")
Remove the air cleaner assembly. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - "Air Cleaner")
Recover the refrigerant using a recovery/recharging station.
Remove the engine compartment cover (A).
Loosen the drive belt. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - Timing System)
Remove the bolts, then disconnect the suction line (A) and discharge line (B) from the compressor.
Tightening torque: 3.9 ~ 5.9 N·m
Plug or cap the lines immediately after disconnecting them to prevent moisture and dust from entering.
Disconnect the compressor switch connector (A).
Remove the compressor (A) by loosening the mounting bolts. [Lambda Engine][Tau Engine]
Installation
Make sure the compressor mounting bolts are threaded to the correct length. Tighten the mounting bolts in the specified tightening sequence.
Tightening torque: 20.00 ~ 33 N·m
[Lambda Engine][Tau Engine]
Install in the reverse order of removal.
If installing a new compressor, drain all refrigerant oil from the removed compressor and measure its volume. Subtract the drained oil volume from the initial capacity. The result is the amount of oil to be drained from the new compressor (through the suction port).
Replace the O-rings with new ones at each fitting and apply a thin coat of refrigerant oil before installation. Be sure to use the correct O-rings for R-134a to prevent leakage.
To avoid contamination, do not return oil to the container after dispensing and never mix it with other types of refrigerant oil.
Immediately after use, close the container with its cap to prevent moisture absorption.
Inspection
Inspect the galvanized parts of the hub assembly (A) for discoloration, peeling, or other damage. If damaged, replace the assembly.
Check the pulley bearing (B) clearance and rotate the pulley by hand. Replace the pulley if it is noisy or has excessive play/drag.
Inspection of Compressor with External Control Valve (GDS)
Compressor type: Fixed displacement compressor, externally controlled valve, internally controlled valve. For the fixed type and internally controlled valve, compressor operation can be checked by the clutch noise. However, for the externally controlled valve, this cannot be checked this way because there is no clutch. Therefore, the ECV should be checked using GDS as shown below.
Connect GDS to the vehicle and select "A/C Compressor Test (ECV Type)". [ECV1]
Prepare the vehicle according to the GDS instructions on the monitor. (Turn off only the A/C switch) [ECV2] [ECV3]
Before inspecting the ECV, check whether other DTCs related to the compressor are detected. If so, resolve those first. If not, press the OK button to continue.
Do not continue the inspection if the following DTCs are detected: B1241, B1242, B1672, B1685, B1686, B1687.
[ECV4]
Start the inspection [ECV5] [ECV6]
Check whether the condenser fan operates when the condition changes to "ECV operating".
The pressure relief valve operates if the condenser fan does not work due to excessive pressure in the system. This helps stabilize the air conditioning system by releasing refrigerant and oil. (Close if stabilized.) ? Recharge refrigerant and oil after the pressure relief valve has operated. ? Noise occurs when the pressure relief valve operates.
Check the inspection result and, if it reads "Check", press "Check Details". Follow the instructions and re-inspect the ECV from the first step. [ECV7] [ECV8]
Disassembly
Remove the engine room cover.
Loosen the drive belt. (Refer to Engine Mechanical System - Timing System)
Remove the center bolt (A) while holding the pulley with disc and hub assembly.
Tightening torque: 10 ~ 15 N·m
Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the disc with hub assembly (A).
Remove the pulley (B) after removing the snap ring (A) with snap ring pliers.
Be careful not to damage the pulley and compressor during disassembly/assembly.
After removing the snap ring, replace it with a new one.
Assemble in the reverse order of disassembly.
Clean the sliding surfaces of the pulley and compressor with a non-oil solvent.
Install a new snap ring and make sure it is fully seated in the groove.
Make sure the pulley rotates smoothly after assembly.
