Fault Diagnosis

  1. In principle, ESC and TCS control is prohibited when the ABS has failed.
  2. When an ESC or TCS failure occurs, only the failed system control is prohibited.
  3. However, when the solenoid valve relay must be turned off due to an ESC failure, refer to the ABS fail-safe.
  4. The ABS fail-safe information is the same as the fail-safe information for systems without ESC.
  5. It keeps the code stored while the warning lamp power is on. (O)
  6. It stores the code as long as HCU power is on. (X)
  7. The initial check is performed immediately after the HECU is powered on.
  8. The valve relay check is performed immediately after IG2 is turned on.
  9. It performs the check at all times while IG2 power is on.
  10. Turn off the system, perform the following steps, and wait for the HECU power to turn off.
  11. Turn off the valve relay.
  12. Stop control during operation and do not perform any action until normal condition is restored.
  13. The ESC warning lamp illuminates for 3 seconds after the ignition is turned on.
  14. The ESC indicator lamp flashes when the ESC system is activated.
  15. In case of an ESC malfunction, the ESC warning lamp illuminates.
  16. The ESP OFF lamp illuminates under the following conditions:
    A. ESC OFF
    B. 3 seconds after the ignition is turned on

Diagnostic Notes
The phenomena listed in the following table are not abnormal.
Condition Description
System Check Sound When the engine is started, a dull knocking sound may sometimes be heard
from the engine compartment. This is because the system
performs a self-check.
ABS Operation Sound
  1. A motor sound (whining) can be heard inside the ABS hydraulic unit.
  2. A grinding sound is generated together with brake pedal vibration.
  3. During ABS operation, sound may come from the vehicle chassis due to repeated depressing and releasing of the brake. (Knocking: suspension; squeal: tires)
ABS Operation (Longer Stopping Distance) On road surfaces such as snowy or gravel roads, the stopping distance of vehicles with ABS may sometimes be longer than that of other vehicles. Accordingly, advise the customer to drive safely on such roads by reducing vehicle speed.
Detection conditions may vary depending on the DTC. When checking the symptom after the
DTC has been erased, make sure the requirements listed in the "Comments" are met.

Check the power supply to the ABS control module. Check for poor grounding. Detection Condition
Symptom Condition Possible Cause
When current flows through the HECU, the ABS warning lamp turns off.
Turn the ignition switch to OFF for the initial check. Therefore, if the lamp does not illuminate,
the cause may be an open in the lamp power supply circuit, a burned-out bulb,
an open in both circuits between the ABS warning lamp and the
HECU, or a faulty HECU.

Check the power supply to the ABS warning lamp. Check the resistance of the ABS warning lamp CAN circuit. Check the wiring of the ABS warning lamp CAN circuit. Detection Condition
Symptom Condition Possible Cause
If the HECU detects a malfunction, it illuminates the ABS warning lamp,
and at the same time inhibits ABS control. At this time, the HECU stores the
DTC in memory. Even though a normal code is set, if the ABS
warning lamp remains on, the cause may be an open or short circuit
in the ABS warning lamp circuit.

  • Faulty instrument cluster assembly

  4. Disconnect the instrument cluster connector (M08) and turn the ignition switch OFF.
  5. Measure the resistance between terminals 33 and 34 of connector (M08) on the instrument cluster wiring harness side.
