Downshifting

~1min read

Downshift to slow down in heavy traffic or when driving up a steep hill to avoid engine lugging.

Downshifting also reduces the chance of stalling and provides better acceleration when you need to increase speed.

When driving downhill, downshift to maintain a safe speed using engine braking, which reduces brake wear.

NOTICE To avoid engine damage: - When downshifting from fifth to fourth gear, take care not to inadvertently push the lever to the left, which would engage second gear. Such a drastic downshift causes engine speed to rise so much that the tachometer enters the red zone. - Do not downshift more than one gear at a time, or downshift when the engine is running at high speed (5,000 RPM or more).
