Trailer Towing Maintenance

~1min read

Your vehicle will require more frequent maintenance when you tow a trailer regularly. Important items to pay attention to include engine oil, automatic transmission fluid, axle lubricant, and engine coolant. Brake condition is another important item to check frequently. If you tow a trailer, it is a good idea to inspect these items before you start your trip. Do not forget to maintain the trailer and the trailer hitch as well. Observe the maintenance schedule that accompanied your trailer and check it periodically. It is advisable to perform an inspection at the start of each driving day. Most importantly, all nuts and bolts of the trailer hitch must be tight.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to the vehicle:

  • Due to the higher load during trailer operation, overheating may occur in hot weather or when driving uphill. If the coolant temperature gauge indicates overheating, turn off the air conditioner and stop the vehicle in a safe place to cool down the engine.
  • Do not turn off the engine while the coolant temperature gauge indicates overheating. (Keep the engine idling to cool the engine.)
  • When towing, check the automatic transmission fluid more frequently.
  • If your vehicle is not equipped with air conditioning, you should install a condenser fan to improve engine performance when towing a trailer.
