Check Tire Pressure

~1min read

Check your tires, including the spare tire, once a month or more often.

How to Check

Use a good tire pressure gauge to check tire pressure. You cannot tell whether your tires are properly inflated just by looking at them. Radial tires may look properly inflated even when they are underinflated.

Remove the valve cap from the tire valve stem. Press the tire pressure gauge firmly onto the valve to obtain a pressure reading. If the cold tire pressure matches the recommended pressure on the tire label located on the driver's side center pillar or in this manual, no further adjustment is necessary. If the pressure is low, add air until the recommended pressure is reached. Be sure to reinstall the valve caps on the valve stems. Without the valve cap, dirt or moisture may enter the valve core and cause air leakage. If the valve cap is missing, install a new one as soon as possible.

If you have overinflated a tire, release air by pressing the metal pin in the center of the tire valve. Recheck the tire pressure with a tire gauge. Be sure to reinstall the valve caps on the valve stems. Without the valve cap, dirt or moisture may enter the valve core and cause an air leak. If a valve cap is missing, install a new one as soon as possible.

A cold tire means the vehicle has been parked for 3 hours and has been driven less than 1 mile (1.6 km) during that 3-hour period.

Allow the tire to cool before measuring the inflation pressure. Always make sure the tire is cold before inflating it to the recommended pressure.
