Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)
Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) is a function of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system. It helps maintain vehicle stability during sudden acceleration or braking on wet, slippery, and uneven roads, where traction on one or more tires may suddenly become uneven.
WARNING
Observe the following precautions when using the Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system:
- ALWAYS check your speed and the distance to the vehicle ahead. VSM is not a substitute for safe driving.
- Never drive faster than road conditions allow. The VSM system cannot prevent accidents. Excessive speed in bad weather, or on slippery and uneven roads, may result in serious accidents.
VSM Operation
VSM Operating Status
VSM operates when:
- Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is turned on.
- The vehicle speed is approximately above 13 mph (22 km/h) on a curved road.
- The vehicle speed is approximately above 10 km/h when braking on a two-surface road.
✱A two-surface road is made of surfaces with different friction levels.
During Operation
When you apply the brake under conditions that may activate ESC, you may hear noise from the brake or feel a corresponding sensation in the brake pedal. This is normal and means that your VSM is active.
Information
VSM does not operate when:
- Driving on a sloped road, such as a grade or incline.
- Driving in reverse.
- The ESC OFF indicator is illuminated.
- EPS (Electronic Power Steering) warning light (
) comes on or flashes.
Driving with wheels and tires of different sizes may cause the ESC system to malfunction. Before replacing tires, make sure all four tires and wheels are the same size. Never drive the vehicle with tires and wheels of different sizes installed.
WARNING
If the ESC indicator (
) or the EPS warning light (
) stays on or flashes, there may be a malfunction in the VSM system. When the warning light illuminates, have your vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.
