Driving Your Vehicle

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

~4min read
Hyundai Palisade. (ESC)

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) helps stabilize the vehicle when maneuvering through turns. ESC checks where you are steering and where the vehicle is actually heading. ESC applies braking force to any of the vehicle's brakes and intervenes in the engine control system to help keep the vehicle on the intended path. It is not a substitute for safe driving. Always adjust your speed and drive according to road conditions.

WARNING

Never drive too fast for road conditions or too fast when cornering. The ESC system will not prevent accidents.

Excessive speed in turns, sudden maneuvers and hydroplaning on wet surfaces may result in serious accidents.

Cruise Control Operation

ESC On Condition

When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the ESC and ESC OFF indicators illuminate for approximately three seconds. After both lights go off, ESC is enabled.

During Operation

Hyundai Palisade. (ESC)

When ESC is operating, the ESC indicator flashes:

  • When you apply the brake under conditions that may lock the wheels, you may hear sounds from the brakes or feel a corresponding pulsation in the brake pedal. This is normal and means that your ESC is active.
  • When the ESC is activated, the engine may not respond to the accelerator as it does under normal conditions.
  • If cruise control is being used when the ESC is activated, the cruise control is automatically canceled. Cruise control can be turned on again when road conditions allow. Refer to "Cruise Control System" later in this chapter. (if equipped)
  • When getting out of mud or driving on slippery roads, the engine speed (rpm) may not increase even if you depress the accelerator pedal fully. This is to maintain stability and traction of the vehicle and does not indicate a problem.

ESC OFF Condition

To cancel ESC operation:

• Condition 1

Briefly press the ESC OFF button. The ESC OFF indicator will illuminate and the message "TCS Off" will be displayed. In this condition, the traction control function of the ESC (engine control) is disabled, but the brake control function of the ESC (brake control) remains operational.

• Condition 2

Press and hold the ESC OFF button continuously for more than 3 seconds. The ESC OFF indicator and the message "TCS and VSM Off" will illuminate and a warning chime will sound. In this condition, both the ESC traction control function (engine control) and the ESC brake control function (brake control) are disabled.

If the ignition switch is in the LOCK/OFF position when ESC is turned off, ESC remains off. After restarting the engine, the ESC system will automatically turn on again.

Indicator Light

Hyundai Palisade. (ESC)

When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the ESC indicator illuminates, then goes off if the ESC system is operating normally. The ESC indicator flashes whenever ESC is operating.

If the ESC indicator light stays on, your vehicle may have a malfunction in the ESC system. When this warning light is on, have your vehicle checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

The ESC OFF indicator illuminates when ESC is turned off.

WARNING

When the ESC indicator is flashing, it indicates that ESC is active:

Drive slowly and NEVER attempt to accelerate quickly. NEVER turn ESC off while the ESC indicator is flashing, or you may lose control of the vehicle, resulting in an accident.

NOTICE

Driving with wheels and tires of 5 different sizes may cause the ESC system to malfunction. Before replacing tires, make sure all four tires and wheels are the same size. Never drive the vehicle with wheels and tires of different sizes installed.

Using ESC OFF

While driving

The ESC OFF mode should only be used briefly to help free the vehicle when stuck in snow or mud, by temporarily disabling ESC to maintain wheel torque.

To turn off ESC while driving, press the ESC OFF button while driving on a level road surface.

NOTICE

To avoid damage to the drivetrain:

  • Do not allow the wheel(s) of one axle to spin excessively during ESC, ABS, and parking brake warning lights are displayed. Repairs are not covered by the vehicle warranty. Reduce engine power and do not spin the wheel(s) excessively while these lights are displayed.
  • When operating the vehicle on a dynamometer, make sure ESC is turned off (ESC OFF indicator illuminated).

Information

Turning ESC off does not affect ABS or the standard operation of the brake system.
