Effective Braking Techniques
WARNING
• When exiting or parking the vehicle, always set the parking brake fully and move the selector lever to the "P" (Park) position. A vehicle with the selector lever not in the "P" (Park) position and the parking brake not applied may move unexpectedly and cause injury to you or others.
• When parking, apply the vehicle's parking brake to prevent unintended movement that could injure passengers or pedestrians.
• When pulling away from a parking space, release the parking brake and make sure its indicator light goes off.
• Driving through water may cause the brake mechanisms to get wet. They may also get wet when washing the vehicle. Wet brakes are dangerous! Stopping distance increases with wet brakes. Wet brakes may also cause the vehicle to pull to one side.
To dry the brakes, apply them lightly while driving until normal braking performance is restored.
Be careful not to lose control of the vehicle. If normal brake performance does not return, stop at the first safe place and seek assistance from an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
• Do not coast downhill.
This is very dangerous. Do not shift to neutral while driving. To reduce speed, apply the brake system, then shift to a lower gear to maintain a safe speed using engine braking.
• Do not ride the brakes. Do not keep your foot on the brake pedal while driving, as this causes the brakes to overheat and lose effectiveness, which can be dangerous. It also accelerates wear of brake system components.
• If a tire loses air pressure while driving, gently apply the service brake and keep the vehicle in a straight line until it comes to a complete stop. When the speed has decreased enough to safely move onto the shoulder, do so and stop in a safe place.
• If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, do not allow the vehicle to creep forward slowly. To prevent creeping, keep the brake pedal depressed while the vehicle is stopped.
• Use caution when parking on a slope. Apply the parking brake and move the shift lever to the "P" (Park) position. To prevent the vehicle from rolling when parked downhill, turn the front wheels toward the curb. To prevent the vehicle from rolling when parked uphill, turn the front wheels away from the curb. If there is no curb, or if other conditions require ensuring the vehicle stays stationary, place wheel chocks under the wheels.
• Under certain conditions the parking brake may freeze in the applied position.
The most likely cause is accumulation of snow or ice in the area of the rear brakes, or wet brakes. If there is a risk of the parking brake freezing, apply it only briefly so that the shift lever can be moved to the P (Park) position and wheel chocks placed behind the rear wheels to prevent vehicle movement. Then release the parking brake.
• Do not hold the vehicle on an incline using the accelerator pedal. This may cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the service brake or parking brake.
