Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS)
The system assists you in steering the vehicle. If the vehicle is turned off or if the power steering system stops working, you can still steer the vehicle, but steering effort will be increased.
If you notice any change in the steering effort during normal vehicle operation, contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
CAUTION
If the motor-driven power steering (
) warning light and the message "Check Motor-Driven Power Steering" appear on the instrument cluster, you may continue to drive the vehicle, but steering will require increased effort. Contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer and have the system checked as soon as possible.
Information
During normal vehicle operation:
- Steering effort may be high immediately after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position. This occurs while the MDPS system performs a system check. When the check is complete, the steering effort returns to normal.
- When battery voltage is low, you may need to apply more effort to steer. This is a temporary condition and returns to normal after the battery is charged.
- A noise may be heard from the MDPS relay after the ignition switch is turned to the ON or LOCK/OFF position.
- Engine noise may be heard when the vehicle is stopped or driven at low speed.
- When steering the steering wheel at low temperatures, an abnormal noise may occur. When the temperature rises, the noise disappears.
- If an error is detected from the MDPS, the steering assist function will not be activated. The warning lights may illuminate on the instrument cluster or the steering effort may be heavier. If these symptoms occur, drive the vehicle to a safe location as soon as possible. Have the system inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.
