STARTING AND OPERATING

AutoStick

~2min read

AutoStick is a driver-interactive transmission function that provides manual gear shift control, giving you more control of the vehicle. AutoStick allows you to maximize engine braking, eliminate unwanted upshifts and downshifts, and improve overall vehicle performance. This system can also give you more control during city driving, cold or slippery road conditions, mountain driving, trailer towing, and many other situations.

Operation

To activate AutoStick mode, move the gear selector to the MANUAL (M) position (next to the DRIVE position). The current gear will be displayed in the instrument cluster.

In AutoStick mode, use the selector (in the MANUAL position) to manually shift gears.

AutoStick mode has the following operating advantages:

  • The transmission will automatically downshift as the vehicle slows down (to prevent engine lugging) and will display the current gear.
  • The transmission will automatically downshift to FIRST gear when the vehicle comes to a stop. After stopping, the driver must manually upshift (+) the gear when the vehicle accelerates.
  • You can start from a stop in FIRST or SECOND gear (or THIRD gear in 4WD Low range). Pressing (+) (while stopped) will allow starting in SECOND gear. Starting in SECOND or THIRD gear may be useful in snowy or icy conditions.
  • If the requested downshift would cause the engine to over-speed, the shift will not occur.
  • The system ignores upshift attempts when vehicle speed is too low.
  • Holding the gear selector in the (-) position will downshift to the lowest available gear at the current speed.
  • Gear shifts will be more noticeable when AutoStick is enabled.
  • The system may return to automatic shift mode if a malfunction or overheating is detected.

NOTE:

When Hill Descent Control is turned on, AutoStick is not active.

To turn off AutoStick mode, return the gear selector to the DRIVE position. You can shift into or out of AutoStick at any time without releasing the accelerator pedal.
