Description and Operation

Description

AGM Battery

An AGM battery is used when the vehicle electrical network has a particularly high load, depending on the equipment and requirements. AGM stands for "Absorbent Glass Mat"; it is a absorbent glass fiber fleece. AGM batteries are installed on models with high electrical load/consumers that have a high energy demand. The constantly growing energy demand of modern vehicle electrical systems requires increasingly powerful battery solutions. Power consumption is significant even when the vehicle is parked. The slightly higher price compared to a battery of similar size is fully offset by the following advantages:

  • Significantly longer service life

  • Improved starting reliability at low temperatures

  • 100% maintenance-free

  • Low risk in the event of an accident (reduced environmental risk)

MF Battery

  1. The CMF (Calcium Maintenance Free) battery, as its name suggests, requires no maintenance at all and has no removable battery caps.

  2. The CMF (Calcium Maintenance Free) battery does not require water replenishment and is not serviceable.

  3. The battery is fully sealed, except for small vent holes in the cover.

Repair Procedures

Removal

  1. Turn the ignition off.

  2. Remove the luggage compartment cover (A).

  3. Remove the luggage compartment center tray (A).

  4. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal (A).

  5. Disconnect the positive (+) terminal (A) from the battery.

  6. Disconnect the vent hose (B).

  7. Remove the battery strap (A).

  8. Remove the battery mounting bracket (B), then remove the battery.

  9. Remove the battery.

Installation

  1. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Adjustment

Electrolyte Level Inspection (MF Serviceable Battery Only)

  1. Make sure the electrolyte level is between the "UPPER" and "LOWER" lines.

  2. If the electrolyte level is below the "LOWER" line, add water until the electrolyte level reaches the "UPPER" line.

    1. Remove the cell caps (A), then carefully add distilled or purified water to bring the electrolyte level in each cell to the "UPPER" line.

    2. Install the cell caps back on the battery.

    3. Charge the battery to mix the water and residual acid in the battery.

Battery Charging

In general, the automotive battery charging system has three forms.

  1. Constant current charging: The battery voltage gradually rises during charging with constant current setting. If the charging current and time are not properly controlled, the battery will be overcharged, so charging should be stopped after confirming that charging is complete.

    • Normal charging: Charging the battery over a long period at a low charging current.

    • Quick charging: Charging the battery for a short time at a high charging current.

  2. Constant voltage charging: The battery charging current gradually decreases during charging with constant voltage setting.

Inspection

Battery Voltage and Condition

Check the battery voltage and condition using a battery tester.

Battery Terminal

  1. Move the battery terminals (A) back and forth to check whether they are loose or corroded. If the terminals are corroded, clean them.

If the battery positive terminal is loose, disconnect the ground (GND) cable before attempting to remove or tighten the positive connection to prevent personal injury.

  2. If the battery clamp on the positive (+) battery terminal is loose:

    1. Turn the ignition off and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.

    2. Tighten the battery clamp (A) on the positive (+) battery terminal.

      Positive (+) battery terminal:

      7,8–9.8 N·m

  3. If the battery clamp on the negative (-) battery terminal is loose:

    1. Tighten the battery clamp (A) on the negative (-) battery terminal.

      Negative (-) battery terminal:

      7,8–9.8 N·m

Battery Condition

Inspect the battery for damage or deformation. If the battery is severely damaged, deformed, or leaking, replace the battery.

Vehicle Parasitic Current Inspection

[Using an Ammeter]

  1. Turn off all electrical devices, then turn the ignition OFF.

  2. Close all doors except the hood, then lock all doors.

    1. Disconnect the hood switch connector.

    2. Close the liftgate.

    3. Close the doors or remove the door switches.

  3. Wait several minutes until the vehicle's electrical systems enter sleep mode.

  4. Connect the ammeter in series between the negative (-) battery terminal and the ground cable, then slowly disconnect the clamp from the negative (-) battery terminal.

  5. Read the ammeter current value.

    • If the parasitic current exceeds the limit value, search for the abnormal circuit by removing the fuses one at a time and checking the parasitic current.

    • Install only the fuse suspected of parasitic current and search for the faulty unit by disconnecting the components connected to the circuit one at a time until the parasitic draw drops below the limit value.

Limit value (after 10–20 min.): below 50 mA.

[Using a Clamp-Type Ammeter]

  4. Install the clamp-type ammeter on the negative (-) battery terminal.

Cleaning

  1. Make sure the ignition switch and all accessories are in the OFF position.

  2. Disconnect the battery cables (negative terminal first).

  3. Remove the battery from the vehicle.

  4. Inspect the battery tray for damage caused by electrolyte leakage. If acid damage is present, clean the area with a solution of clean warm water and baking soda. Scrub the area with a stiff brush and wipe with a cloth dampened with baking soda and water.

  5. Clean the top of the battery with the same solution described above.

  6. Inspect the battery case and cover for cracks. If cracks are present, the battery must be replaced.

  7. Clean the battery terminals with a suitable tool.

  8. Clean the inside surfaces of the battery terminal clamps with a suitable battery terminal cleaning tool. Replace damaged or worn cables and broken terminal clamps.

  9. Install the battery in the vehicle.

  10. Connect the cable terminals to the battery terminal, making sure the upper parts of the terminal are level with the tops of the posts.

  11. Tighten the terminal nuts securely.

  12. After tightening, apply light mineral grease to all connections.
