Setting the Speed (Smart Cruise Control System)

~4min read

Setting the Smart Cruise Control Speed

1. Press the CRUISE button to turn on the system. The CRUISE indicator on the instrument cluster will illuminate.

2. Accelerate to the desired speed.

  • 30 km/h ~ 200 km/h: When there is no vehicle ahead
  • 0 km/h ~ 200 km/h: When there is a vehicle ahead

3. Move the lever down (to SET-) and release it at the desired speed. The set speed and the distance between vehicles will appear on the LCD screen.

4. Release the accelerator pedal. The desired speed will be maintained automatically.

If a vehicle is ahead of you, the speed may decrease to maintain the distance to the vehicle ahead.

On a steep hill, the vehicle may slightly decelerate or accelerate uphill or downhill.

Your vehicle speed may decrease on an uphill grade and increase on a downhill grade.

The speed will be set to 30 km/h if there is a vehicle ahead, and your vehicle speed is 0~30 km/h.

To increase the cruise control set speed

Perform any of the following procedures:

  • Move the lever up (to RES+) and hold it. The set speed of your vehicle will increase by 10 km/h. Release the lever at the desired speed.
  • Move the lever up (to RES+) and release it immediately. The cruise speed will increase by 1 km/h each time the lever is moved up (to RES+) in this way.
  • The Smart Cruise Control system will operate up to a maximum setting of 200 km/h (120 mph). However, all local speed limit laws must be observed.

To Decrease the Cruise Control Set Speed

Perform any of the following procedures:

  • Move the lever down (to SET-) and hold it. The set speed of your vehicle will decrease by 10 km/h. Release the lever at the desired speed.
  • Move the lever down (to SET-) and release it immediately. The cruise speed will decrease by 1 km/h each time the lever is moved down (to SET-) in this way.
  • You can set cruise control at speeds above 30 km/h.

To temporarily accelerate with cruise control on:

If you want to temporarily increase speed with cruise control on, press the accelerator pedal. The increased speed will not interfere with cruise control operation or change the set speed.

To return to the set speed, release the accelerator pedal.

If you move the lever down (to SET-) at a higher speed, the cruise speed will decrease. It can be set again.

NOTICE

Be careful when accelerating temporarily, because the speed is not controlled automatically at this time, even if a vehicle is ahead of you.

The Smart Cruise Control system will be temporarily deactivated if:

Canceled Manually

The Smart Cruise Control system is temporarily deactivated when the brake pedal is pressed or the CANCEL button is pressed. The set speed and the vehicle-to-vehicle distance indicator on the instrument panel will disappear and the CRUISE indicator will stay on continuously.

Canceled Automatically

  • The driver door is opened.
  • The shift lever is in N (Neutral), R (Reverse) or P (Park).
  • The EPB (Electronic Parking Brake) is applied.
  • The vehicle speed is above 210 km/h.
  • ESC, ABS, or TCS is operating.
  • ESC is turned off.
  • The sensor or cover is contaminated or blocked by foreign matter.
  • The vehicle has been stopped for more than 5 minutes.
  • The driver starts moving by pressing the lever up (RES+) or down (SET-), or by pressing the accelerator pedal approximately 3 seconds after the vehicle is stopped by the Smart Cruise Control system, if there are no other vehicles ahead or the vehicle stopped far ahead.
  • The engine speed is in the danger range.
  • The Smart Cruise Control system has malfunctioned.
  • The accelerator pedal has been pressed continuously for a long time.
  • When the ISG mode is activated.
  • When the brake control is used for Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA).
  • The vehicle stops and starts repeatedly over a long period of time.
  • When the parking brake is applied.
  • The engine has some problems.
Any of these actions cancels the Smart Cruise Control system operation. (The set speed and the vehicle-to-vehicle distance on the LCD will disappear.)
If the Smart Cruise Control system is cancelled automatically, the Smart Cruise Control system will not resume operation even when the RES+ or SET- lever is moved.

If the Smart Cruise Control system is cancelled during a situation not discussed in the previous "Automatically Cancelled" section, have the system checked by an authorized Kia dealer.

✽ NOTICE

If the system is cancelled automatically, a warning chime will sound and a message will appear for several seconds. You must adjust vehicle speed by pressing the accelerator or brake pedal depending on the road and traffic conditions ahead. Always check road conditions. Do not rely on the warning chime.

To Resume the Cruise Control Set Speed

If any method other than the CRUISE button was used to cancel the cruise speed and the system is still activated, the cruise speed will automatically resume when the lever is moved up/down (to RES+ or SET-).

If you move the lever up (to RES+), the speed will return to the last set speed. It will resume only at a speed below approximately 30 km/h when there is a vehicle ahead.

WARNING. Following Distance

  • To avoid a collision, always pay attention to the set speed and the distance to the vehicle ahead when the Smart Cruise Control is activated.
  • Always maintain a sufficient braking distance and reduce vehicle speed by applying the brakes when necessary.

To Turn Off Cruise Control

Press the CRUISE button. (The CRUISE indicator on the instrument cluster will turn off.)

If the Smart Cruise Control system is not needed, press the [CRUISE] switch to deactivate the system.
