7. Heater and Bypass Pipe

Repair Procedures

Removal and Installation

  1. Remove the engine compartment under cover (front).

(See Engine and Transaxle Assembly - Under Hood)

  2. Drain the engine coolant.

(Refer to Cooling System - "Engine Coolant")

  3. Remove the water pump belt.

(See Drive Belt System - Drive Belt)

  4. Remove the electric thermostat (ECT).

(Refer to Cooling System - Electric Thermostat (ECT)).

  5. Remove the water pump pulley (A).

    Tightening torque: 7.8–9.8 N·m

  6. Remove the water pump assembly (A) with the gasket.

    Tightening torque: 18.6 – 24 N·m

  7. Disconnect the water supply hose to the turbocharger (A).

  8. Remove the nuts securing the heater and bypass pipe (A).

    Tightening Torque: 9.8–11.8 N·m

  9. Remove the water pump housing (A) with the gasket.

    Tightening torque: 18.6 – 24 N·m

  10. Disconnect the heater hoses (A).

  11. Disconnect the bypass hose (A).

  12. Remove the heater and bypass pipe (A).

  13. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.

  14. Fill the coolant.

(Refer to Cooling System - "Engine Coolant")

  15. Start the engine and check for leaks.

  16. Recheck the engine coolant level.

Inspection

  1. Inspect each component for cracks, damage or wear, and replace the water pump assembly if necessary.

  2. Inspect the bearing for damage, abnormal noise and rough rotation, and replace the water pump assembly if necessary.

  3. Check for coolant leakage. If coolant leaks from the hole, the seal is damaged.

    Replace the water pump assembly.

Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

Symptoms Possible Causes Remedy
Coolant Leakage
  • From the water pump drain hole

Visually inspect
  • Check for leaks after warming up the engine for approximately 10 minutes.

  • If coolant continues to leak, replace the water pump.

  • If the leak stops, reuse the water pump (do not replace it with a new pump).

  • From the gaskets or bolts

  • Check the tightening torque of the water pump mounting bolts.

  • Tighten the mounting bolts.

  • Check for damage to the gasket or contamination by dust.

  • Replace the gasket and clean off any dust.

  • From the outer surface of the water pump

  • Check the water pump material and check for cracks.

  • Poor material. If any crack is found, replace the water pump.

Noise
  • From the bearings

  • From the mechanical seals

  • Impeller interference

Inspection using a stethoscope
  • After starting the engine, check for noise with a stethoscope.

  • If there is no noise, reuse the water pump (do not replace it).

  • If there is noise from the water pump, remove the drive belt and recheck.

Inspection after drive belt removal
  • After removing the water pump and drive belt, check the noise again.

  • If there is noise, reuse the water pump. Check the other drive part line.

  • If there is no noise, replace the water pump with a new one.

Check after water pump removal
  • After removing the water pump and drive belt, check the noise again.

  • If there is any interference between them, replace the water pump with a new one.

Overheating
  • Damaged impeller

  • Loose impeller

Loose impeller
  • Corrosion of impeller blade

  • Check the engine coolant.

  • Poor coolant quality / maintenance

  • Separation of impeller from shaft

  • Replace the water pump.
