Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) (Check Engine Light)

~2min read

This indicator is part of the engine control system that monitors the various components of the emission control system. If this indicator illuminates while driving, it indicates that a potential problem has been detected somewhere in the emission control system.

This indicator also illuminates when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position and goes out a few seconds after the engine starts. If it illuminates while driving or does not illuminate when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, it is recommended that the system be inspected by an authorized Kia dealer. Normally, your vehicle will still be drivable, but it is recommended that the system be inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

CAUTION

Continued driving with the malfunction indicator lamp illuminated may cause damage to the emission control system, which may affect drivability and/or fuel economy.

WARNING - Gasoline Engine

If the malfunction indicator lamp illuminates, the catalytic converter may be damaged, which may result in loss of engine power. It is recommended that the system be inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

WARNING - Diesel Engine (if equipped with DPF)

If the malfunction indicator lamp is flashing, it may stop flashing after driving the vehicle at a speed above 60 km/h or for more than one second at 1500 to 2500 rpm engine speed for a certain period of time (about 25 minutes). If the malfunction indicator lamp continues to flash despite these procedures, it is recommended that the system be inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.

If you continue driving with the malfunction indicator flashing for a long time, the DPF system may be damaged and fuel economy may deteriorate.

WARNING - Diesel engine

If the malfunction indicator lamp is flashing, an error related to the injection quantity adjustment has occurred, which may result in loss of engine power, combustion noise, and poor emissions. It is recommended that the system be inspected by an authorized Kia dealer.
