For Best Battery Performance

  • Keep the battery securely mounted.
  • Keep the top of the battery clean and dry.
  • Keep the terminals and connections clean, tight, and coated with petroleum jelly or terminal grease.
  • Immediately rinse any spilled electrolyte with a solution of water and baking soda.
  • If you plan not to use the vehicle for an extended period, disconnect the battery cables.
WARNING - Battery Hazards

cesAlways read
these instructions carefully when handling a battery.

un gaz trèsHydrogen,
a highly flammable gas, is always present in the battery cells and can explode if ignited.

batteries horsKeep
batteries out of the reach of children because they contain highly corrosive SULFURIC ACID. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, clothing, and painted surfaces.

l'électrolyte entre enIf
electrolyte gets into your eyes, flush them with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and get immediate medical attention.

If electrolyte contacts your skin, wash the affected area thoroughly. If you feel pain or a burning sensation, get immediate medical attention.

lunettes deWear
safety glasses when charging a battery or working near a battery. Always ensure good ventilation when working in an enclosed space.

disposed of improperly can be harmful to the environment and human health. Dispose of the battery according to local laws or regulations.

  • When lifting a plastic-case battery, pressure on the case can cause acid to spill and cause injury. Use a battery carrier or place your hands at opposite corners of the battery.
  • Never attempt to charge a battery while its cables are connected.
  • The electric ignition system uses very high voltage. Never touch these components while the engine is running or the ignition is on.

Failure to follow these warnings can result in serious or fatal injury.

CAUTION
  • If you plan not to use the vehicle for a long period in cold weather, remove the battery and store it indoors.
  • In cold regions, always fully charge the battery to prevent damage to the case.
  • Connecting unapproved electronic devices to the battery may discharge it. Never use unapproved devices.
WARNING

Battery removal from the vehicle should be performed by an authorized Kia dealer.

Charging a Battery

Your vehicle is equipped with a maintenance-free lead-calcium battery.

  • If the battery discharges quickly (for example, you left the headlights or interior lights on while the vehicle was not in use), perform a 10-hour slow maintenance charge.
  • If the battery gradually discharges due to electrical load while the vehicle is in use, recharge it at 20 or 30 A for two hours.
WARNING - Battery Charging

When charging a battery, take the following precautions:

  • The battery must be removed from the vehicle and placed in a well-ventilated area.
  • Monitor the battery during charging. Stop charging or reduce the charge rate if the cells begin to produce vapor or if the electrolyte temperature in the cells exceeds 49°C (120°F).
  • Wear safety glasses when checking the battery during charging.
  • Disconnect the battery charger in the following order:
  1. Turn off the charger's main switch.
  2. Disconnect the negative clamp from the negative battery terminal.
  3. Disconnect the positive clamp from the positive battery terminal.
  • Before servicing or charging a battery, turn off all accessories and stop the engine.
  • When removing and installing the battery, disconnect the negative battery cable first and reconnect it last.

Resetting Features

Some features must be reset when the battery has been discharged or disconnected.

  • Auto-down Windows (see section 4)
  • Sunroof (see section 4)
  • Trip Computer (see section 4)
  • Air Conditioning (see section 4)
  • Clock (see section 4)
