Trunk lock prevention function when the electronic key is inside the trunk
- If all doors are locked and the trunk lid is closed while the electronic key is inside the trunk, an alarm sounds.
In this case, the trunk lid can be opened by pressing the trunk unlock button on the trunk lid.
- Even if the spare electronic key is inside the trunk and all doors are locked, the lock-out prevention function can be activated so that the trunk can be opened. To prevent theft, take all electronic keys with you when you leave the vehicle.
- Even if the electronic key is inside the trunk and all doors are locked, the key may not be detected depending on the location and the strength of radio waves in the surroundings. In that case the lock-out prevention function cannot be activated, and the doors will lock when the trunk is closed.
Before closing the trunk, check where the key is.
- The lock-out prevention function cannot be activated if any door is not locked. In this case, open the trunk using the trunk opener switch.
Overload Protection Function (vehicles with power trunk lid)
The trunk lid will not open if an excessive load is placed on it.
Drop Prevention Function (vehicles with power trunk lid)
If an excessive force is applied to the trunk lid while it opens automatically, the opening operation stops to prevent the trunk lid from dropping quickly.
Pinch Prevention Function (vehicles with power trunk lid)
If something becomes caught while the trunk lid closes automatically, the closing operation stops and the lid opens again.
If the Smart Entry & Start System or the remote control does not operate properly
- Open the trunk using the mechanical key.
- Replace the key battery if it is depleted.

WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Otherwise, fatal or serious injuries may result.
Before driving
- Make sure the trunk lid is fully closed. If the trunk lid is not fully closed, it may open unexpectedly while driving and strike nearby objects, or luggage may fall out of the trunk and cause an accident.
- Do not allow children to play in the trunk. If a child is accidentally locked in the trunk, the child may suffer heat injury or other injuries, or may suffocate.
- Never allow a child to open or close the trunk lid. The trunk lid may open unexpectedly, or the child's hands, head or neck may be caught when the trunk lid closes.
Important points while driving
Never allow anyone to ride in the luggage compartment. In the event of sudden braking or a collision, this may result in fatal or serious injuries.
WARNING
Using the Luggage Compartment
Observe the following precautions.
Otherwise, body parts may become trapped, which may result in serious injury.
- Remove heavy loads such as snow or ice from the trunk lid before opening it. Otherwise, the trunk lid may close suddenly after it has been opened.
- Before opening and closing the trunk lid, make sure the surroundings are safe.
- If anyone is nearby, ensure sufficient safety and warn the person(s) that the trunk is being opened or closed.
- Be especially careful when opening or closing the trunk lid in strong wind, as it may move suddenly due to gusts.
- The trunk lid may close suddenly if it is not fully open. It is more difficult to open or close the trunk lid on a slope than on level ground. Therefore, be prepared for the trunk lid to open or close suddenly on its own. Make sure the trunk lid is fully open and secured before using the luggage compartment.

- When closing the trunk lid, take particular care not to pinch your fingers, etc.
- When closing the trunk lid, gently press it from the outside. If the trunk lid grip is used to fully close the trunk lid, hands or arms may become trapped.

- Only install genuine Lexus parts on the trunk lid. Added weight on the trunk lid may cause it to close suddenly after it has been opened.
Trunk Automatic Closing System
If the trunk lid remains slightly open, it is automatically closed completely by the trunk automatic closing system. It takes several seconds for the trunk automatic closing system to start operating. Make sure that no fingers or other body parts are caught by the trunk lid, as this may result in broken bones or other serious injuries.
WARNING
Power Trunk Lid (If Equipped)
Observe the following precautions when using the power trunk lid.
Otherwise, serious injury may result.
- Check the safety of the surrounding area, and make sure there are no obstacles and that no luggage can become trapped.
- If anyone is nearby, ensure sufficient safety and warn the person(s) that the trunk is being opened or closed.
- If the trunk close switch is pressed while the trunk lid is opening automatically, the opening operation will stop. Be especially careful when the vehicle is parked on a slope, as the trunk lid may open or close suddenly in this situation.
- On a slope, the trunk lid may close suddenly after opening automatically. Make sure the trunk lid is fully open and secured before using the luggage compartment.
- In the following situations, the power trunk lid may detect a malfunction and stop automatic operation. In this case, the trunk lid must be opened or closed by hand. Be especially careful in such a situation, as the stopped trunk lid may close suddenly and cause an accident.
- Only install genuine Lexus parts on the trunk lid. Otherwise, the power trunk lid may no longer function properly or may close suddenly after opening.
Anti-Pinch Function (Vehicles with Power Trunk Lid)
Observe the following precautions.
Otherwise, serious injury may result.
- Never intentionally try to activate the anti-pinch function with a body part.
- If an object becomes caught when the trunk lid is almost closed, the anti-pinch function may not activate. Make sure that no fingers or objects can become caught in the trunk lid.
- Depending on the shape of the trapped object, the anti-pinch function may not activate. Make sure that no fingers or objects are caught.
How to Prevent Trunk Automatic Closing System Malfunctions
Do not apply pressure to the trunk lid while the trunk automatic closing system is operating.
How to Avoid Damage to the Power Trunk Lid (If Equipped)
- Before using the power trunk lid, make sure there is no luggage or snow on it. Also make sure there is no ice between the trunk lid and the body frame that could prevent the trunk lid from moving. Using the power trunk lid with an excessive load on it may cause a malfunction.
- Do not apply excessive pressure to the power trunk lid while it is operating.
The trunk of the Lexus GS GRL1 can be opened and closed conveniently in several ways: by button, remote control, or optionally by power operation. The intelligent design keeps loading the sports sedan easy and secure. The trunk anti-theft system also underlines the high security philosophy.
Additional functions such as the anti-pinch and anti-drop protection systems provide the highest level of safety and help prevent injury or damage when opening and closing the luggage compartment.
