The instrument illumination of the Lexus GS (2016–2020) can be adjusted individually to provide optimal legibility in all lighting conditions. Switching between the odometer and trip meter is also easy. This chapter describes the function of the welcome lighting, the variable red zone of the tachometer and the eco driving indicator. In this way, vehicle information in the Lexus GS is not only useful but also an aesthetic experience.

Switching the Display

Odometer/Trip Meter

You can switch between the odometer and trip meter displays. When the trip meter is displayed, it can be reset by pressing and holding the button.

Instrument Display and Layout

When the drive mode is changed, some of the instrument displays and the display layout change.

Requirements for the Instrument Panel and Indicator Lights

The engine switch is in the IGNITION ON mode.

Welcome Lighting of the Analog Speedometer

  • When the driver's door is opened, the analog speedometer lights up. After the driver's door is closed, the analog speedometer lights up 3 times and then turns off again (it pulses).
  • In the following situations, the analog speedometer does not pulse, even when the driver's door is opened and closed:
Less than 60 seconds have passed since the analog speedometer last pulsed. Less than 60 seconds have passed since the engine switch was turned off.

Variable Red Zone

To protect the engine, engine speed is monitored by changing the start of the tachometer's red zone within a range of 3700 rpm (min-1) to 7300 rpm (min-1), depending on the engine coolant temperature.

Before driving under extremely high load conditions, make sure the engine has warmed up sufficiently.

Eco Driving Indicator

  • The number of blue segments shown on the eco driving indicator increases or decreases depending on vehicle acceleration. Use this indicator as a guide when you want to drive in an eco-friendly and fuel-efficient manner.

Please note, however, that on a downhill slope where the vehicle can accelerate without depressing the accelerator pedal, the eco driving indicator may not display the eco status correctly.

  • When the shift lever is in "P", "N" or "R", the segments change to gray and the Eco Driving Indicator is turned off.

Customizing the Instrument Panel Brightness

The brightness of the instrument panel lights can be adjusted individually for when the tail lights are on and off. However, when the surroundings are bright (daytime, etc.), turning on the tail lights does not change the instrument panel brightness.

Dimming the Analog Tachometer Illumination

The analog tachometer illumination dims when the ambient light is bright (such as during the day) and "SPORT S" or "SPORT S+" mode is selected.

Outside Temperature Display

  • In the following situations, the outside temperature may not be displayed correctly, or the display may take longer than usual to change.
When the vehicle is stopped or being driven at low speed (less than 20 km/h). When the outside temperature changes very suddenly (when driving into or out of a garage, a tunnel, etc.).
  • If "− −" or "E" is displayed, there may be a malfunction in the system. Take your vehicle to a Lexus dealer or an authorized repair shop, or to another qualified and properly equipped repair facility.

Pop-up Messages

  • In certain situations, such as when a switch is operated, a pop-up display temporarily appears on the Multi-Information Display.
  • You can turn some pop-up messages on or off.

Liquid Crystal Display

Small dots or points of light may appear on the display. This is typical of liquid crystal displays and does not affect continued use of the display.

Customization

You can customize the instrument display on the Multi-Information Display to suit your needs.

WARNING

Information Display in Low Temperatures

Before using the liquid crystal information display, allow the vehicle interior to warm up. At very low temperatures, the information display may respond slowly and switch displays with a delay.

For example, there may be a delay between the driver shifting gears and the new gear being shown on the display. This delay may cause the driver to downshift again, resulting in sudden and excessive engine braking and, consequently, an accident causing death or serious injury.

NOTE

To Avoid Damage to the Engine and Its Components

  • Make sure the tachometer needle does not enter the red zone, which indicates the engine speed range beyond the maximum safe engine speed.
  • The engine may be overheating in the following situations. If this occurs, stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately and check the engine after it has cooled down completely.
The needle ( ) of the engine coolant temperature gauge is in the red zone and flashing. The needle ( ) of the engine oil temperature gauge is in the red zone and flashing.

In the Lexus GS (4th generation, model years 2016–2020), drivers can customize the instrument cluster displays to further enhance driving comfort. The ability to adjust instrument illumination and layout according to driving mode or lighting conditions reflects the intelligent design of this premium sedan. The variable red zone of the tachometer also protects the engine when it is cold.

Thanks to these features, the Lexus GS sport sedan (body code GRL1) is not only a high-performance vehicle but also one that is particularly easy to operate. Whether on long trips or in city traffic, the instruments provide accurate information at all times.

FAQ

How do I adjust the brightness of the instrument illumination in the Lexus GS?

The brightness can be adjusted individually using the control buttons, depending on whether the tail lights are on or off.

Why does the red zone on the tachometer change?

The variable red zone protects the engine during warm-up by adjusting the maximum engine speed to the engine coolant temperature.
