Inhibitor Switch (Back-up Lamp and Starter Lock-out)
GENERAL INFORMATION

Inhibitor Switch Adjustment
1. Switch lever
2. Transmission selector lever
3. Adjustment holes
4. 4 mm drill
The switch is screwed into the front of the transmission case and performs two functions: it prevents the starter from engaging only in the N or P selector positions, and it activates the back-up lamp signal in the R selector position.
Inspection
PROCEDURE
1. If the starter engages in any position other than N or P, the switch is faulty or its adjustment is incorrect.
2. If the back-up lamps do not come on, the switch must be checked.
3. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on stands.
4. Disconnect the connector from the switch.

5. Check the resistance between the terminals in the N, P or R selector positions. On a good switch, terminals 1 and 2 are continuous in the N and P selector positions, and terminals 3 and 4 are continuous in the R selector position.
6. If these contacts are not continuous, loosen the mounting bolts and adjust the switch.
7. If adjustment does not correct the problem, replace the switch.
Removal
PROCEDURE
1. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it on stands.
2. Disconnect the connector.
3. Remove the three bolts and remove the switch from the selector mechanism.
Installation
PROCEDURE
1. Install the switch and tighten the bolts.
2. Move the selector to N.
3. Insert a 4 mm diameter drill bit into the hole in the upper part of the selector and through the hole in the switch lever.
4. Tighten the bolts and remove the drill bit.
5. Connect the wires and check the switch operation.
