Automatic transmission

Selector lever 1
Display A on the instrument panel shows the mode and the gear engaged.
P: Park
R: Reverse
N: Neutral
D: automatic mode (forward only)
2: displays the gear engaged in manual mode.

Starting
With the lever in P or N, switch on the ignition.
With your foot on the brake pedal (indicator 3 goes off), move the lever out of P.
Only move the lever to D or R when the vehicle is stationary, with your foot on the brake and the accelerator pedal released.
To move the lever out of P, you must press the brake pedal before pressing the release button.
Driving in automatic mode
Move selector lever 1 to position D.
In most driving conditions, you will no longer need to touch the lever: the gears will change automatically, at the right time and at the appropriate engine speed, as the "automatic" function takes into account the vehicle load, the road profile and the selected driving style.
Acceleration and overtaking
Press the accelerator pedal firmly and fully down (past the pedal's kickdown point).
This allows the transmission to downshift to the optimum gear, as far as engine speed permits.
Driving in manual mode
With selector lever 1 in D, move the lever to the left. Successive pulses on the lever allow you to change gears manually:
- to downshift, push the lever rearward;
- to upshift, push the lever forward.
The selected gear is shown on the instrument panel.
Special cases
In certain driving situations (for example, engine protection, or activation of dynamic driving control: ESP…), the "automatic" function may select the gear itself.
Likewise, to avoid "incorrect shifts", the gear change may be refused by the "automatic system": in this case the gear indicator flashes for a few seconds to warn you.
Economical driving

Economical driving
On the road, always leave the selector lever in position D, with the accelerator pedal lightly depressed; the gears will shift automatically to a low gear.
Malfunction
- While driving, if the message "gearbox fault" together with the warning light
appears on the instrument panel, it indicates a fault.Consult a brand representative as soon as possible.
- While driving, if the message "gearbox overheating" appears on the instrument panel, drive at a moderate speed and, when traffic conditions allow, avoid leaving the selector lever in position D (or R): always return it to position N while stopped.
Consult a brand representative as soon as possible.
- Towing an automatic gearbox vehicle, refer to the "Towing: Breakdown Assistance" section in Chapter 5.
Exceptional situations

Exceptional situations
- Snow mode: when driving on low-grip surfaces (snow, mud, etc.), press switch 4; indicator 5 comes on.
Outside these driving conditions, exit this mode by pressing switch 4 again. Indicator 5 goes off.

- If the road profile and bends do not allow driving in automatic mode (e.g. in mountains), it is recommended to switch to manual mode.
This prevents successive gear changes by the "automatic system" when going uphill, and provides engine braking on long descents.
- In very cold weather, to avoid stalling the engine, wait a few moments before leaving position P or N and engaging D or R.
- Vehicle not fitted with the anti-spin system: on slippery roads or low-grip surfaces, to avoid wheel spin when pulling away, select second gear manually before starting off.
Parking the vehicle
When the vehicle is stopped, keep your foot on the brake and move the selector lever to position P: the gearbox is in neutral and the drive wheels are mechanically locked by the transmission.
Apply the parking brake.
