General information on air conditioning. Actual temperature. Sensors - climate. Air quality - interior filter
The air conditioning in the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) provides a pleasant and safe interior climate by cooling, heating or dehumidifying the air as needed. This section explains the basics of the function, the importance of closed windows and the behavior at different outside temperatures. It also covers the role of the sensors and filters, which enable precise control and high air quality. Notes on care and replacing the interior filter help maintain the comfort and efficiency of the system.
General information on air conditioning
The vehicle is equipped with electronic climate control. The air conditioning cools, heats or dehumidifies the air in the vehicle interior.
CAUTIONThe air conditioning (AC) can be switched off, but should always remain on for the best possible climate comfort in the vehicle interior and to prevent the windows from fogging up.
Please note
- For the air conditioning to work optimally, the side windows and the sunroof* must be closed.
- The ventilation function opens/closes
all side windows at once and can be used, for example, to quickly air out the vehicle when outside temperatures are warm. - Remove ice and snow from the air intake for the air conditioning (gap between hood and windshield).
- At high outside temperatures, condensation water may drip from the air conditioning under the vehicle. This is completely normal.
- When full engine power is required, e.g. when accelerating at full throttle, the air conditioning may be switched off temporarily. This can cause a temporary rise in the temperature inside the vehicle.
- To remove fogging on the inside of the windshield, use the defrost function first.
To reduce the risk of fogging, the windows must be cleaned with ordinary glass cleaner.
Do not cover the ventilation openings along the parcel shelf with clothing or other objects, to prevent the rear window from fogging up.
Vehicles with Start/Stop*
When the engine is stopped automatically, the function of certain equipment may be temporarily reduced, e.g. the air conditioning fan speed.
Vehicles with ECO*
When the ECO function is activated, certain functions, such as the air conditioning, may be temporarily reduced or switched off.
CAUTIONWhen the ECO function is activated, certain air conditioning settings are changed and the functions of certain electrical consumers are restricted. Some settings can be reset manually, but full functionality is only restored by deactivating the ECO function.

Actual temperature
The temperature in the vehicle interior that you select corresponds to the temperature perceived by the body. This takes into account the outside temperature, air speed, humidity, solar radiation and other factors that affect the interior and body of the vehicle.
A solar sensor in the system detects from which side the sun is shining into the interior. As a result, the temperature of the right and left air vents may differ, even though the control is set to the same temperature on both sides.

Sensors - Climate
The climate control system has a number of sensors for regulating the temperature in the vehicle.
- The solar sensor is located on top of the instrument panel.
- The interior temperature sensor is located under the climate control panel.
- The outside temperature sensor is located in the exterior mirror.
- The humidity sensor* is located on the interior rearview mirror.
Do not cover the sensors with clothing or other objects.

Air quality - Interior air filter
All air that enters the vehicle interior is cleaned by a filter.
The filter must be replaced regularly. Replace the filter as recommended in the Volvo service program.
If the vehicle is driven in heavily polluted environments, more frequent replacement may be necessary.
CAUTIONThere are different types of interior air filters.
Make sure the correct filter is installed.
