The Engine and Interior Heater of the Volvo S80 (2nd generation, 2013–2016) provides comfortable temperatures before departure and protects the engine and battery. This section describes how to use the heater via direct start or timer and gives instructions for safe handling. Particular emphasis is placed on avoiding exhaust gas hazards and on correct parking when the heater is in use. Tips on saving energy and protecting the battery complete the information.

By preconditioning, the heater warms up the engine and passenger compartment before departure, which reduces both wear and energy consumption while driving.

The heater can be started directly or by using the timer.

If the outside temperature exceeds 15 °C, the heater cannot be started. At temperatures around -5 °C or below, the maximum operating time of the heater is 50 minutes.

WARNING

Do not use the fuel-operated heater in enclosed spaces. Exhaust gases are released.

CAUTION

When the fuel-operated heater is running, smoke may escape from the right wheel housing of the vehicle. This is completely normal.

Refueling

WARNING

Spilled fuel can ignite.

Switch off the fuel-operated heater before refueling.

Check in the instrument cluster that the heater is switched off; when it is operating, the heater symbol is displayed.

Parking on a Slope

If the vehicle is parked on a steep slope, it should be positioned with the front pointing downhill to ensure the fuel supply to the fuel-operated heater.

Battery and Fuel

If the battery is too weak or the fuel level is too low, the heater switches off automatically and a message is shown in the information display. Confirm the message by pressing the OK button on the turn signal lever.

IMPORTANT

Repeated use of the heater combined with short journeys will discharge the battery and cause starting difficulties.

To ensure the battery is recharged with the amount of energy the heater consumes, drive the vehicle for as long as the heater runs each time when the heater is used regularly. The heater is used for a maximum of 50 minutes on each occasion.
