Starting and stopping the engine
Starting the engine
The engine can only be started using an original Audi key.

Fig. 145 Ignition key positions
On vehicles with gasoline engine:
- Press the brake pedal.
- Manual transmission: Depress the clutch pedal fully.
- Move the gear lever to neutral (automatic transmission: selector lever in position P or N).
- Turn the ignition key to position (2). Do not press the accelerator pedal!
- Release the ignition key as soon as the engine starts - the starter must not turn with the engine running.
On vehicles with diesel engine:
- Press the brake pedal.
- Manual transmission: Depress the clutch pedal fully.
- Move the gear lever to neutral (automatic transmission: selector lever in position P or N).
- Turn the ignition key to position (1) - the
indicator light glows during preheating
. - When the
indicator light goes out
, turn the ignition key to position (2). Do not press the accelerator pedal. - Release the ignition key as soon as the engine starts - the starter must not turn with the engine running.
After starting a cold engine, loud noises may briefly occur, because oil pressure must first build up in the hydraulic valve clearance compensation system. This is normal and should not cause concern.
If the engine does not start immediately, stop the starting process after 10 seconds and wait approximately 30 seconds before repeating the procedure.
Glow plug system*
Diesel engines are equipped with a glow plug system. The preheating time depends on the coolant temperature and the outside temperature. Start the engine immediately after the preheating indicator light goes out.
When the engine is at operating temperature or outside temperatures are above +8 °C, the preheating indicator light only glows for approximately one second. This means the engine can be started immediately.
If the engine does not start ...
- Jump starting
- Towing and push-starting
- Refueling
CAUTION!
Never let the engine run in a closed room - risk of poisoning!
Warning!
Avoid high engine speeds, full-throttle driving and heavy loads until the engine has reached operating temperature - risk of engine damage!
Environment
Do not warm up the engine while the vehicle is stationary. Drive off immediately.
This avoids unnecessary emission of pollutants.
Switching off the engine
- Turn the ignition key to position

, fig. 145.
CAUTION!
- Never switch off the engine before the vehicle has come to a complete stop.
- The brake booster and power steering only work when the engine is running. You need more force to steer or brake when the engine is switched off. Since you cannot steer or brake as usual, there is a significant risk of accident and injury.
Warning!
If you switch off the engine after it has been under heavy load for an extended period, heat can build up in the engine compartment - risk of engine damage! Let the engine idle for approximately 2 more minutes before switching it off.
Note
After the engine is switched off, the radiator fan may continue to run for up to 10 minutes - even if the ignition is switched off. It may also switch on again after some time if the coolant temperature rises due to heat buildup, or if the engine compartment is exposed to sunlight while the engine is hot.
