General. Functional requirements. Tire settings. Status display
This chapter provides a comprehensive introduction to the tire settings, status displays and requirements for the function of the RDC in the BMW 5 Series G30. Sensors measure not only the tire inflation pressure but also the temperature. Via iDrive, summer and winter tire profiles can be stored, target pressures adjusted and the current status displayed. A correct reset after every wheel change or pressure adjustment is essential to receive warnings reliably. The driver is advised that incorrect settings can lead to misleading messages. A well-designed system that combines technology with comfort and safety.
General
Sensors in the tire valves measure the tire inflation pressure and the tire temperature.
Using the tire settings in iDrive, the system can automatically display the specified target pressures and compare them with the current tire inflation pressures.
For tires that are not listed in the tire inflation pressure information on the vehicle, e.g. tires with special approval, the system must be actively reset. This adopts the current tire inflation pressures as target pressures.
For operation of the system, also observe the further information and notes in the chapter Tire inflation pressure.
Safety information
WARNING The display of target pressures does not replace the tire inflation pressure information on the vehicle. Incorrect information in the tire settings leads to incorrect target tire inflation pressures. A reliable warning of tire pressure loss is then not guaranteed. There is a risk of injury and damage to property. Make sure the tire sizes of the mounted tires are entered correctly and match the information on the tires and the tire data.
Prerequisites for operation
The following requirements must be met for the system, otherwise a reliable warning of tire pressure loss is not guaranteed:
- After every tire or wheel change, the correct information on the mounted tires has been entered in the tire settings.
- For tires with special approval:
- After a tire or wheel change, a reset has been performed with the correct tire inflation pressure.
- After adjusting the tire inflation pressure to a new value, a reset has been performed.
- Wheels with RDC electronics.
Tire settings
General
The tire sizes of the mounted tires can be read from the tire inflation pressure information on the vehicle or directly on the tire.
The tire information does not need to be entered again when the tire inflation pressure is corrected.
For summer and winter tires, the most recently entered tire information is stored in each case.
This allows the settings of the most recently used tire sets to be selected after a tire or wheel change.

Making settings
Via iDrive:

- Select the tire type mounted on the rear axle:
- Tire size, e.g. 225/55 R17 97W
- For tires with special approval: "Other tire"
- Select the vehicle load condition once a tire size has been selected.
- "Confirm settings"
The measurement of the current tire pressure is started. The progress of the measurement is shown.
Status display
Current status
The system status can be shown on the Control Display, e.g. whether the system is active.
Via iDrive:
- "My Vehicle"
- "Vehicle status"
"Tire Pressure Control (RDC)"
The current status is displayed.
Current tire inflation pressure
The current tire inflation pressure is displayed for each tire.
The current tire inflation pressures can change due to driving or outside temperature.
Target pressure
The target tire pressure for the front and rear axle tires is displayed.
The target pressures are values stored in the vehicle.
The specified target pressure takes into account temperature effects from driving or the outside temperature. The appropriate target pressure is always displayed regardless of weather conditions, tire temperatures and driving times.
The displayed target pressure can change and may differ from the tire pressure specifications on the
door pillar of the driver's door. The tire inflation pressure can therefore be corrected to the value of the displayed target pressures.
The target pressure is adjusted immediately when the load condition is changed in the tire settings.
The information on the spare wheel in the BMW 5 Series (G30/G31) highlights the importance of safety and practicality. In emergencies, a spare wheel can be very useful, even though it is intended for temporary use only. The notes on correct installation and speed restrictions help minimize risks.
The tip to check the air pressure in the spare wheel regularly is particularly helpful, so that it is ready for use in an emergency. The recommendation to always stow the defective wheel securely also reflects the high safety standards of the vehicle.
FAQQuestion 1: How fast may you drive with a spare wheel?
Answer: A maximum of 80 km/h, to ensure stability and safety.
Question 2: Must the spare wheel be replaced immediately after use?
Answer: Yes, it should be replaced with a full-size wheel as soon as possible.
