Tire status. For tires with special approval: perform reset. Messages. Behavior in case of a tire puncture
This chapter describes the different states of the RDC system, warning messages and the correct behavior in case of a tire puncture in the BMW 5 Series, 7th generation. Colored displays on the screen show whether the system is active or has detected a problem. For special tires, a reset is essential after a pressure change or wheel change. Detailed instructions help with troubleshooting and provide clear safety information. Caution is especially advised in the event of a significant pressure loss. The system actively protects you, provided it is used correctly.
Tire status
General
The tire and system status is shown on the Control Display by the color of the wheels and a text message.
Existing messages may not be cleared if the displayed target pressure is not reached when correcting the tire inflation pressure.
All wheels green
- The system is active and refers to the displayed target pressures for the warning.
- For tires with special approval: The system is active and refers to the tire inflation pressures last stored during the reset for the warning.
One to four wheels yellow
A tire puncture or a significant tire pressure loss in the displayed tires has occurred.
Wheels grey
Tire pressure losses may not be detected.
Possible causes:
- Malfunction.
- During tire pressure measurement, after confirming the tire settings.
- For tires with special approval: System reset is performed.
For tires with special approval: Perform reset
General
A reset must be performed in the following situations:
- After adjusting the tire inflation pressure.
- After a tire or wheel change.
Reset
Via iDrive:
- "My Vehicle"
- "Vehicle status"
- "Tire Pressure Control (RDC)"
- Switch on ready-to-drive mode and do not drive off.
- Reset tire inflation pressure: "Perform reset"
- Drive off.
The wheels are shown in grey and the following is displayed: "Tire Pressure Control reset in progress..."
After a short drive above 30 km/h, the set tire inflation pressures are adopted as the specified tire inflation pressures. The reset is completed automatically while driving.
After the reset has been completed successfully, the wheels are shown in green on the Control Display and the following is displayed: "Tire Pressure Control active. Target values see tire pressure label." The drive can be interrupted at any time.
The reset continues automatically when driving further.
Messages
Message when a tire pressure check is required
A Check Control message is displayed.
Possible causes:
- Inflation was not carried out correctly, e.g. not enough air was added.
- The tire settings have not been updated.
- For tires with special approval:
- The system has detected a wheel change without a reset having been performed.
- The tire inflation pressure has dropped since the last reset.
- No reset has been performed for the system. For the warning, the system refers to the tire inflation pressures last stored during the reset.
In these cases:
- Check the tire inflation pressure and correct it if necessary.
- Update the tire settings.
- For tires with special approval: Perform a system reset.
Message when tire inflation pressure is too low
The yellow warning light is on.
A Check Control message is displayed.
Possible causes:
- A tire pressure loss has occurred.
- For tires with special approval: No reset has been performed for the system.
In these cases:
- Reduce speed. Do not exceed a speed of 130 km/h.
- At the next opportunity, e.g. at a filling station, check the tire inflation pressure in all four tires and correct it if necessary.
- For tires with special approval: Perform a system reset.
Message when there is a significant tire pressure loss
The yellow warning light is on.
In addition, a symbol with the affected tire is shown in the Check Control message.
Possible causes:
- A tire puncture or a significant tire pressure loss has occurred.
- For tires with special approval: No reset has been performed for the system.
In these cases:
- Reduce speed and stop carefully. Avoid heavy braking and steering maneuvers.
- Check whether the vehicle is fitted with standard tires or tires with run-flat properties.
WARNING A damaged standard tire with low or no tire pressure impairs handling, e.g. steering and braking response. Run-flat tires can maintain limited stability. There is a risk of an accident.
Do not continue driving if the vehicle is fitted with standard tires. Observe the notes on run-flat tires and on driving with these tires.
Run-flat tires are marked with a circular symbol containing the letters RSC on the tire sidewall.
When a low tire pressure message is displayed, Dynamic Stability Control DSC may be switched on.
Procedure in the event of a tire puncture
Standard tires
- Identify the damaged tire.
Check the tire pressure in all four tires, e.g. with the tire pressure gauge of a tire repair kit.
Run-flat tires: If the tire pressure is correct in all four tires, a reset for the RDC may not have been carried out.
Then carry out a reset.
If no tire damage can be identified, contact a manufacturer service partner, another qualified service partner or a specialist workshop.Using sealant, e.g. from a tire repair kit, can damage the RDC wheel electronics.
Have the electronics replaced at the earliest opportunity.
Tires with run-flat properties
Safety notes
WARNING With run-flat tires without or with low tire pressure, handling changes, e.g. reduced directional stability when braking, longer braking distance and changed self-steering behavior. There is a risk of an accident.
Drive carefully and do not exceed a speed of 80 km/h.
WARNING When continuing to drive with a tire puncture, particularly heavy trailers may start to sway. There is a risk of an accident or of property damage.
When towing a trailer with a tire puncture, do not exceed a speed of 60 km/h.
If the trailer starts to sway, brake immediately and make any necessary steering corrections as carefully as possible.
Maximum speed
Driving with a damaged tire is possible for a maximum of 80 km/h.
Continuing to drive with a tire puncture
When continuing to drive with a damaged tire, observe the following:
- Avoid sudden braking and steering maneuvers.
- Do not exceed a speed of 80 km/h.
- Check the tire pressure in all four tires at the earliest opportunity.
Run-flat tires: If the tire pressure is correct in all four tires, Tire Pressure Control may not have been reset.
No reset performed. Then perform reset.Possible driving distance with a deflated tire
The possible driving distance varies depending on the vehicle load and operating conditions, e.g.
speed, road surface, outside temperature.
The driving distance may be shorter or, with gentle driving, longer.
With medium load and low stress, the possible driving distance can be up to 80 km.
Handling with damaged tires
When driving with a damaged tire, handling changes and may, for example, lead to the following situations:
the following situations:
- faster breakaway of the vehicle
- longer braking distance
- changed self-steering behavior
Adapt your driving style. Avoid abrupt steering or driving over obstacles, e.g. curbs, potholes, etc.
The jump-start points on the BMW 5 G30/G31 are designed to allow safe jump-starting with a discharged battery without damaging sensitive components. The exact position of the positive and negative terminals and the sequence of steps are essential to avoid risks such as sparking or electronics damage.
It is particularly important to use only jump leads approved for 12-volt systems and to observe the specifications for cable cross-section. This underlines the high standard of technical precision and safety required for the BMW 5 G30/G31.
This shows that, even in exceptional situations, the vehicle provides well-considered support that guides the driver safely.
