Wheel and Tire Replacement

Lack of expertise and improper handling of tires may cause damage or lead to an accident.

Have this work performed only by BMW Service Center specialists. They have the necessary knowledge and equipment and will always be glad to help you.

The combination of wheels and tires affects various systems, such as ABS, DSC, and xDrive. Selecting an incorrect combination may adversely affect their operation.

After replacing a tire or wheel, balance the wheels.

BMW does not recommend using retreaded tires. They reduce the level of safety. The reason is the varying degree of wear and severe aging of the carcass, which adversely affects the strength of the entire tire.

Correct Wheels and Tires

BMW recommends using only wheels and tires approved by BMW for the respective vehicle model, because even tires of the nominal size may, due to manufacturing tolerances, rub against the body and cause a serious accident.

BMW does not guarantee the safety of non-recommended wheels and tires, because it cannot judge their suitability.

To maintain normal handling characteristics, install tires of the same brand and with the same tread pattern on all wheels.

If damaged, restore the recommended wheel and tire combination as soon as possible.

Recommended Tire Brands:

For each size, there are tire brands that BMW has tested, approved as safe, and recommended for use. You can obtain information about them at a BMW Service Center. When registering the vehicle, observe national laws and regulations.

The recommended radial tires are best suited to your vehicle and, when properly used, provide optimum safety and the necessary comfort.

Winter Tire Characteristics
For winter driving conditions, BMW recommends winter tires. Standard-fitted all-season tires marked M+S are better suited for winter conditions than summer tires, but as a rule they are still inferior in effectiveness to winter tires.

When replacing summer tires with winter tires, observe the rules described in the sections "Tire Condition" on page 146 and "Wheel or Tire Replacement" on this page.

Speed Rating:

If the maximum permissible vehicle speed exceeds the speed rating of the winter tires, a corresponding speed plate must be within the driver's field of view. This plate can be obtained from the tire dealer or a BMW Service Center.

Never exceed the maximum speed permitted for the respective winter tires.

Storage
Store removed wheels or tires in a cool, dry and, if possible, dark place. Protect tires from contact with fuel and lubricants.
