Reliable braking

~2min read

Emergency braking: When circumstances require, brake hard, fully depressing the brake pedal. Since the vehicle remains steerable, you can safely steer around obstacles in your path.

Pulsation of the brake pedal combined with the noise produced by the hydraulic system during operation indicates to the driver that braking is under ABS control.

Brake fluid level: If the brake fluid level drops below the minimum and the pedal travel increases noticeably, one of the brake hydraulic circuits may have failed.

Braking distance may increase and the vehicle may pull slightly to one side. Take this into account when choosing your driving style.

Disc brakes: Intensive use of disc brake assemblies promotes self-cleaning. Therefore, low mileage, long periods of standstill and light brake use create favorable conditions for corrosion of the brake discs and contamination of the brake pads.

During braking, corroded discs cause vibration, which often cannot be eliminated even by prolonged pressure on the brake pedal.

In wet weather or rain, it is advisable to apply the brake pedal lightly from time to time. Make sure your actions do not create hazards for other road users. The brake discs and pads will dry out from the heat generated during braking and will respond without delay when needed.

On long or steep downhill grades, select a gear that minimizes the need to brake.

This relieves the brakes of excessive load and thus prevents a possible reduction in their effectiveness.

In neutral there is no positive connection to the engine, and with the engine off the brake and steering power assist do not operate.

BMW recommends having the brake system checked only by BMW service center specialists. Incompetent work may damage components and parts of the all-wheel drive system.

Floor mats and other objects must not obstruct the travel of the brake, clutch and accelerator pedals.
