General driving rules
Exhaust system heat
All vehicles with a catalytic converter have areas of high heat. Do not remove or coat with anti-corrosion compound the heat shields mounted on the exhaust system. Make sure the hot exhaust system does not come into contact with easily ignitable materials (such as hay or dry leaves). Otherwise there is a risk of fire, which may result in serious personal injury or property damage.
When parked: Condensate forms in the air conditioning system and drains under the vehicle.
In this case, water under the vehicle is normal.
Brakes
Do not rest your foot on the brake pedal while driving. Even light but prolonged pressure on the pedal can cause severe heating and wear of the brake components, up to and including brake system failure.
Before entering an automatic car wash: To avoid damage, fold in the outside mirrors, see page 52, to reduce the vehicle width.
Hydroplaning
When driving on a wet or muddy road, reduce speed, since a water wedge may form between the tires and the road. This condition may result in partial or complete loss of contact with the road surface, leading to loss of vehicle control and making braking impossible.
Water crossings
The vehicle can ford water up to 50 cm deep. At this depth, drive at walking pace, otherwise damage to the engine, electrical system and transmission cannot be ruled out.
Mobile phones in the vehicle
BMW does not recommend using mobile communication devices, such as cell phones, in the vehicle unless they are connected to an external antenna, because the vehicle electrical system and the mobile devices may interfere with each other. In addition, the vehicle body may block radiation emitted by the device.
