Brake Fluid
Brake fluid level
If the brake system warning lamp illuminates or the message “CHECK BRAKE FLUID” appears: stop driving immediately. The brake fluid level in the reservoir is low.
Topping up brake fluid: The brake fluid reservoir is located under the microfilter cover on the driver's side. To top up brake fluid or to eliminate the cause of a leak, contact a BMW service center.
BMW service workshop personnel know which brake fluids – DOT 4 – are recommended by the manufacturer.
A brake fluid leak may cause the brake pedal travel to increase. In this regard, also follow the instructions on page 145.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air over time.
To ensure reliable operation of the brake system, have the brake fluid replaced every two years at a BMW service center. See also page 75 and the service booklet.
Brake fluid is harmful to health and attacks paint finishes. Therefore, store it in closed original containers out of the reach of children.
Do not spill brake fluid.
Do not fill above the MAX mark on the reservoir. Brake fluid may ignite on contact with hot engine components and cause burns.
When disposing of brake fluid, observe the laws governing environmental protection.
